Specialists' Weekly Report

Our Specialist Program began this week across all year levels. We are extremely lucky to have 3 new staff beginning at SMPS in 2019. Please read on to find out a little more about this terrific trio!

Lucy Lu (Mandarin)

My name is Lucy Lu and I am from Shanghai, China.

I graduated from Monash University, majoring in teaching early years and primary students. I’m a passionate Mandarin teacher, bringing the Chinese culture to both first language learners as well as students who may speak Chinese at home.

I believe in engaging students in a dynamic classroom environment, teaching Mandarin by promoting and encouraging our students from South Melbourne Primary School to be confident, engaged and active learners. I also welcome meetings with parents and carers, whose unique insights and experiences, I believe, are vital in my planning in order to meet each students’ needs & goals.

My interests include music, sports, cooking and language education.

I am very excited to join South Melbourne Primary School in the upcoming year.

Ghada Ali Fahmi (Coding & Robotics)

I have just moved to Melbourne from the United Arab Emirates where I began teaching in 2007 at Victoria International School of Sharjah. I am so excited about joining South Melbourne Primary School and engage our young community members to learn about Coding, Robotics and other Digital Technologies.

Outside the classroom I enjoys sports, music and travel, all of which contribute to the rich experience which I feels gives me a better understanding of the world.

I have completed a Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in Computer Engineering in 2001 and obtained a Master of Education from Deakin University in Victoria, Australia in 2014. In my Master’s degree, I’ve specialized in educational leadership, research and in the creative teaching of mathematics. I have a degree in teaching Computer Science for KS3/Middle Year students from the United Kingdom in 2016.

For me, education is a lifelong process and the pathway to true freedom and self-fulfilment. School is where students are given the intellectual and psychological tools to become lifetime learners. I have a great belief in the power of applied positive psychology to help students reach their full potential. As a teacher in the classroom, I work to recognize each student as a unique individual who has special gifts which need to be nurtured and developed. I have always believed that the relationship with my students is the key to success and this is what underpins my teaching method.

Welcome to all and have a wonderful 2019 academic year!

Mary Richardson (Art)

My name is Mary Richardson and I am the art teacher at South Melbourne Primary, part of the fantastic specialists team! Since I was young, I have always loved the creativity and self expression in visual arts and I am excited to involve learning from all different types of styles and artists from across the word and the ages in our art classes this year. I am passionate about creating authentic, hands on, student-centered learning experiences for my students that draw upon the rich culture and community that we have represented here at SMPS and in the South Melbourne community.

I attended Central Washington University in the United States, graduating with a Bachelors of Education in Elementary Education and a minor degree in Science Education. In addition to teaching as a primary teacher in the United States, I have had the privilege to teach across all grade levels and subject areas in the Melbourne area as a relief teacher, giving me a firm foundation of Victorian standards, curriculum, and school culture. Besides creating and teaching art, I love to get outdoors and travel as much as possible and enjoy scuba diving, hiking, baking, and going to concerts and art museums.
