Dental Health

Good dental health and diet are closely related. Dental caries and cavities may be a result of a diet high in sugar. There are several risk factors associated with dental caries.

The 3 main factors that lead to dental caries are sugars, oral bacteria and the time these are combined in the presence of the tooth. For example, sticky sugary foods are much more likely to cause dental caries than non-sticky sugary foods.

Ensuring your child brushes their teeth regularly is just one part of the solution. A healthy diet needs to consist of vegetables, fruit, wholegrain cereals, lean meats and legumes as well as calcium rich dairy and dairy alternatives.

A diet high in sugar will not only affect teeth but may replace your child’s intake of food rich in vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy growth and development. If your Dentist or Oral Health therapist has identified caries or cavities in your child’s teeth, you may find it helpful to see a Dietitian for advice and resources. Accessing a dietitian at Star Health is easy and affordable. We are a non-profit community organisation providing access to health care for all. Call or drop by to self- refer and make an appointment for your child.

Tips

  • Limit sweet foods to meal times instead of between meals. This reduces the length of time teeth are subjected to an acid attack
  • Dairy foods as well as being rich in calcium for strong bones and teeth, will also stimulate saliva which protects your teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water daily throughout the day to clear food fragments from your teeth.

Barring Djinang Kindergarten (on level 5)

The Kindergarten are back and well into 2019! At the end of last year we said our sad goodbyes to our students who were starting school this year. It was wonderful to be able to go and visit them for their first day of Prep at SMPS. All the students were very happy to see the Kindergarten teachers and were asking to come back to visit us. Please come and say hi at any time!

This week we celebrated Lunar New Year. The children have been busy making origami pigs (it’s the year of the pig!), dragons, lanterns and lots of other creative work. On Wednesday we had three families come and join us to share some of their culture with us – making spring onion pancakes, reading Chinese stories and explaining the story of Chinese lunar new year. The children were all dressed up wither in red or cultural clothing. A fantastic day and week was had by all. Thankyou to our wonderful families at the Kindergarten for sharing your culture and experiences with us all.       猪年大吉 (wish you luck in the year of Pig).
