Sport Report

Term 4, week 5, 2019

There was a sense of business this week as staff and students had Year 11 retreat commitments which saw a few changes in the coaching ranks. Special thanks to Mr Suters and Mr Bond who stepped when needed to fill the gaps. The weekly individual efforts continue to flood the weekly reports and are a strong indication of the talent the College has in its ranks. Important games for Berg Shield and the First XI in the Champion Schools Cup this week. Go Greg’s.

1st XI had a Bye

2nd XI 5/105 were defeated by St. Dominic’s 4/110

St Greg’s won the toss and elected to bat this afternoon against a strong 1st Grade outfit from St Dom’s. The boys faced some sharp bowling early on, only managing 26 off the first 6 overs. Things started to pick up after that and we finished our innings on 5/105. Our runs came from Brodie Roth 13, Jacob Shortland 16, Matt Canellis 3, Daniel Beattie 25, Lachlan Vella 32* and Jake Quodling 6*. Our innings with the ball started very well taking 4 wickets in the first 6 overs. Unfortunately, it fell apart after that, the Dom’s batsmen were playing some great cricket shots, chasing our total in 11 overs. Credit to a few of our bowlers whose figures were; Jake Quodling 2/30, Struan Carlisle 1-7 off two including a maiden, Charlie Guymer 1-15.

MVP: Lachlan Vella (Donovan)

Mr R. Suters

3rd XI 9/99 defeated Eastwood 6/97

3rd Grade, may you please collect your 'Get out of jail free' card. A very disciplined bowling effort from our 3rd XI saw Marist Eastwood restricted to 6/97 from their 20 overs on what was a fast field. Some fantastic efforts in the field by Harrison Barnett, Alex Mullan, Jacob Ward and Aaron Phillips helped our bowlers to some very respectable bowling figures. Congratulations must also go to David De Vecchis who made his 3rd Grade cricketing debut and was fantastic support to the team in his first ever cricket match representing the College. Well done David!

Batting second, our innings started with disaster being 3 for 4, due to some great bowling by Eastwood. Noah Morris (16) and Hayden Cortis (10) were able to put some runs on the board but quickly the team was reduced to 7/52 and then 9/73. Ethan Clancy then came to the rescue with a composed yet aggressive 25 not out as he managed to bring the team home in the 19th over to a surprising but worthy victory.

MVP: Ethan Clancy (Molloy)

Mr W. Goodsell

4th XI 3/98 defeated (Fairfield (3/97)

4th XI had a slow start against Patrician Brothers Fairfield last Thursday. However, with some stellar bowling by Jim Hogan (2/13) taking 2 wickets in a row and a full toss wicket taking out the middle stump from Lachlan McGufficke (1/19) Patrician Brothers ended their innings with 3/97. With a chase that looked easy, it didn't start off well for Greg's with the first wicket falling in the second over. Some good bowling from Patrician Brothers had Greg's worried at the start, but with a quick partnership between Blake Ciscato (33 runs) and Jack Rule then with the dismissal of Blake to bring in Ben Elworthy (12 runs), secured the win for 4th grade, with Jack hitting a total of 46 runs off 24 balls. Excellent performance by Greg's bringing home their first win of the season.

MVP: Jack Rule (Molloy)

9/10 A Cricket defeated Eastwood

The Year 9/10A cricket team scored a strong win over Eastwood in Round Four. St Greg's won the toss and sent Eastwood into bat. Opening bowlers, Tim Saunders and Riley Kingsell, combined to bowl accurately and with pace to restrict scoring and take the wickets of the top order batters. Tim Saunders was particularly effective and finished his overs with 3/3 and Riley took one wicket with a fine catch by Ben Gregory. Eastwood having lost four wickets for only 16 runs dug in and pushed their score at the end of twenty overs to 103. Sam Gelder and Blake Truman helped to take two further wickets. The St Greg's run chase started with a powerhouse 35 runs by Blake Truman which laid a great foundation to build on. Jack Losurdo and Lachlan Stanley helped build our total but Riley Kingsell attacked the bowling and scored nine 4's and two 6's in his total of 47 not out to help secure the win for St Greg's in 12 overs. Congratulations to all the boys in the team for their effort and individual contributions to the team's success.

MVP: Riley Kingsell (Molloy)

Mr G. Bond

9/10 B Cricket (0/68) defeated Fairfield (8/67)

Fairfield batted first and managed to score 67 runs. Jack Kingwill 2/15, M. Gveric 2/6, C. Cross 2/8.

St Greg's Bs were able to reach this score in the 5th over without the loss of a wicket. Cooper Cross undefeated on 50*

MVP: Cooper Cross (Molloy)

Mrs J. Sligar

7/8 A Cricket 5/189 defeated Eastwood (5/170)

St Greg’s won the toss and elected to bat building a tremendous score of 5/189 off 20. Isaac Gasson was instrumental in dismissing Eastwood’s best two batsman. Bowling highlights included: Isaac Gasson with 3/3 off 4; Brayden Murray was very handy in the field with a catch. Working together in a great combination Ben Taylor and Daniel Canellis dismissed no. 5. Batting highlights included: Isaac Gasson 69, Coby Holland 81 and Jack Spragg 16.

MVP: Coby Holland (Donovan)

Mr G. Bingham

7/8 B Cricket 6/137 defeated Eastwood (7/47)

Special thanks to the team for a warm welcome and the manner in which they represented the College. Very impressive to watch from the get-go. Against a less skilled opposition Greg's won the toss and worked the Fairfield bowlers around the park at 6 runs an over. Harry Davies led from the front foot and compiled 51 runs before being dismissed. Noah Henley added 27 and Sam Kelly 11 to reach 6/137. Fairfield started their innings with 5 runs off the first 3 balls and the game broke open until Fairfield's run rate dropped to 2 runs an over. Wickets tumbled as all the boys had 2 overs each. Consistent bowling by all led by Patrick Salecich 1/3, Jack Dash 2/9, Oliver Kendall 2/3.

MVP:  Harry Davies (Laurentian)

Mr J. Cook

1st Grade Basketball (71) defeated Eastwood (46)

MVP: Riley Anderson (Donovan)

Mrs Giles

2nd Grade Basketball (29) defeated Eastwood (24)

Big improvement. Defensive trap worked very well. Teamwork improved in both offence and defence.

MVP: James Hilton (Molloy)

Mr Perna

Year 9/10 Basketball (15) were defeated by Eastwood (46)

The boys were in the game for the first 10 minutes. They showed commitment and determination. However, they unfortunately got complacent and let Marist Eastwood run away with the rest of the game. The same focus required to arrest our poor result. Doing the simple things, greater commitment and talking to each other are essential if we are to turn our season around.

MVP: Samuel Barry (Kilian)

Mr Ivancic

Year 8/9 Basketball (21) were defeated by Eastwood (26)

The boys started very well in the game and scored some easy points from Eastwood turnovers. In a scrappy affair we went into halftime up 12-7 and the lead could have been larger. The second half was once again another learning experience for the boys. A lack of execution and intensity led to us losing the second half by 10

Sport Report

Term 4, week 6, 2019

An impressive round of MCS action saw the College earn three from five wins in the Basketball and four from four in the Cricket. Several teams had the bye and our 4th XI unfortunately had no game as their opposition had to forfeit.

Some unfortunate news for our College 1st XI in the NSW Champion Schools Cup as poor field management deprived the College of competing in the finals for the fourth year straight. The 1st XI are to be congratulated on fantastic year after winning the 2018 Marist Carnival and the 18/19 MCS competition, Runners Up in the 2018/19 Downie Shield and semi-finalists in the Champion Schools Cup. The team has certainly set College expectations very high for future College teams.

Our U15 Berg Shield Cricket team will take on Freeman College in Round 3 on Monday 18th and if successful will host Round 4 on Wednesday 20th and will play the winner of St Augustine’s (Brookvale) and MacKillop Catholic College. Many thanks to the boys who gave up their time to play on the boarder’s weekend.

On Wednesday 13th Hayden Goodwin and Martin Henry represented the College at the Marshall Rogers Golf Day. Both students played very well and represented the College outstandingly throughout the day. Playing against older and more experienced teams, the boys were able to come home in third place, with Hayden also winning the longest drive on one hole. A good warm-up for the Campbelltown Pro-Am which the boys will contest in December. Great job gents.

1st XI (0/82) defeated Blacktown (7/81)

After our defeat in the semi-finals for All Schools, our boys showed hunger against their opposition in Round 5 of the MCS Cricket Season. Wickets came consistently for our bowlers, with young Lachlan Campbell proving his call up to First Grade was well justified with 2/12 off his 4 overs. Blacktown were 7/81 after an 18 over reduced matched. Sanjiv Weerasingham and Josh Shipley wasted no time reaching the target. Josh must have had his Weetbix for breakfast, scoring 51 off 35 balls. Greg's achieved the win at the end of the 9th over - 0/82.

MVP: Joshua Shipley (Molloy)

Mr M. Bullock

2nd XI had the bye

3rd XI had the bye

4th XI defeated Blacktown by forfeit

Unfortunately, the Blacktown opposition failed to turn up and the team was left without a game.

9/10 A Cricket 1/38 defeated Auburn (10/37)

A strong performance by the 9A's in Round 5. We made the journey out to Auburn to play Trinity Catholic College and the boys were switched on from ball 1. Blake Truman took 4/14 opening the bowling and he was ably supported by Tim Saunders and Rahul Lal who took 3/9 and 3/7 respectively. Trinity never really got going with the bat and the bowlers had their radars on because 9 wickets fell to bowled or LBW decisions. In reply St Greg's made quick work of the 38-run chase finishing the match before the 5th over was complete. 15 runs each to Tom Chell and Riley Kingsell wrapped up proceedings nicely.

MVP: Blake Truman (Donovan)

Mr L. McGinnity

9/10 B Cricket (4/77) defeated Blacktown (9/76)

A great effort from the bowlers and fielders restricted Blacktown to 76 runs. Despite a couple of early wickets, St Greg's B managed the 77 required for victory in the 10th over.

MVP: Aiden Ellis 49* (Laurentian)

Mrs J. Sligar

7/8 A Cricket had the bye

7/8 B Cricket (2/115) defeated Blacktown (10/48)

On a hot afternoon at Blacktown, Harry Davies lost the toss unfortunately and we were sent in to bat. Our two openers Tom Dzevlan and Harry Davies put on a terrific opening partnership of 92 which ended in the 16th over when Tom Dzevlan got run out for 22. We finished our innings at 2/115. It was slow going for Blacktown’s batsmen who were 7/18 after 10 overs. We finished the innings taking 10/48 in the 18th over. Credit goes to the following bowlers; Jack McDonald 4-3 off 4, Joshua Ryan 2-6 off 2, Tom Dzevlan 2-9 off 4 and one wicket each to Pat Salecich and Noah Henley.

MVP:  Jack McDonald (Molloy)

Mr R. Suters

1st Grade Basketball (60) defeated Fairfield (28)

After the great win by Second Grade, the team was pumped for a win. Extremely solid in the first 6 minutes going up 18 - 0. Some lucky 3-point baskets got Fairfield back into the game, but we still had a strong lead at half-time 28-14. Wearing black arm bands for Mr Truman's passing throughout the morning and showing support for the 3 Truman brothers the team got the job done. Jordan Ward's near coast to coast and a kiss to the black arm band really said it all. Great work gentlemen, as always, very proud coach.

MVP: Lindsay Munro (Laurentian)

Mrs Giles

2nd Grade Basketball (68) defeated Fairfield (24)

Our best performance of the year. All players did their job extremely well. Defence and rebounding was outstanding and the boys held out Fairfield for an impressive win.

MVP: Elijah Barry (Kilian)

Mr Perna

Year 9/10 Basketball (27) were defeated by Fairfield (46)

The boys started the game by scoring the first points which got us off on the right foot compared to previous games. We soon addressed some issues in a time-out to stop our opposition extending their lead. We hustled back into the game with some key shooting from Kian Boyne and solid defence from Bryce Skillen. The boys put an impressive performance this week and were unfortunate not to push Fairfield for the points. Well done.

MVP: Kian Boyne (Molloy)

Mr Ivancic

Year 8/9 Basketball (31) were defeated by Fairfield (45)

This game was a bit of a mixed bag. After starting the game well the boy's fell into an rut in the first half. We couldn't get anything going offensively and our lack of execution close to the basket led to a 24-9 scoreline at halftime. Credit to the boys they didn't drop their heads and delivered a much-improved performance in the second half. We came roaring back into the game cutting the oppositions lead to 6 points with time remaining to steal the win. Unfortunately, Fairfield lifted their game and we were unable to get the job done. We actually won the second half 22-21 which was a great positive for us to take out of the game. With more consistency, execution and confidence in themselves I'm sure the boys will achieve the elusive victory that they crave sooner rather than later!

MVP: Kohan Prenter (Molloy)

Mr Limbrey

Year 7/8 Basketball (53) defeated Fairfield (24)

The team came out strong getting a good lead after the first ten minutes, surprising Fairfield with strong full court defence. Down one of our big’s, the team needed to readjust and even though the opposition fought back towards the end of the first half, the team put in a very solid performance to get a 15-point win.

MVP: Taj Stapleton (Donovan)

NSW Champion Schools Cup

St Gregory’s 1st Grade team travelled to Daceyville on Wednesday 13th November to take part in the semi-final of the NSW Cricket Champions Schools Cup against Westfield Sports High. The winner of the game would progress through to the final against The Kings School, Parramatta.

Our team arrived to find a wet pitch due to a mix up in communications by ground management and the playing surface being water the morning of the game. This resulted in an initial rain delay. At 10:00am what would an all-important toss due to the moisture in the wicket was held and unfortunately for St Greg’s this was won by Westfield’s who took no time in deciding to bowl first. This decision to avoid batting first would be vindicated with the first ball of the day being pitched on a good length but surprising our opener Cameron Cotter and crashing into the badge of his helmet. This saw umpires immediately call for another 90 minute delay to the game in the hope the pitch would continue to dry out.

Variable bounce and movement off the seam saw St Greg’s struggle for the first 20 overs of our reduced innings with wickets regularly falling. Some fantastic grit and determination by Liam Sutton who stubbornly reached his half-century was the highlight of a difficult innings. Manoj Weerasingham also contributed with a cavalier 29 not out in a rear guard resistance of the higher order and helped our team limp to a modest yet potentially defendable innings of 10/140.

With a pitch quickly drying out and losing any venom that it held in the morning, Westfield Sports High made light work of the total as the pitch provided little for our bowlers and much to the batsmen in the second half of the day. This saw them reach our innings with the loss of 4 wickets by the 17th over. The coach of Westfield Sports High stated it best when he remarked that he was disappointed that the decision of such a game would be determined by a wet pitch and most likely who won the toss.

I would like to thank our team for representing the College very well and to congratulate those Year 12 students who played their final game for St Greg’s. For the younger students in our team, I hope to see them back next year representing our school as one of the best cricketing schools in NSW.
