Australian Science Competition

Earlier in the year a group of science students participated in the Australian Science Competition. They were tasked with completing an online multiple choice quiz that tested critical thinking and problem solving skills, based on real life, contemporary ideas. We had some excellent results highlighted below:

Distinctions

Year 7: Bailey Danjoux, Oliver Kendal, Jack McDonald, Mason Rope

Year 8: Daniel Melendez

Year 9: Jonah Cutajar

Year 10: Tom Cusack, Connor Mangion

High Distinctions

Year 9: Andrew Parkin

Year 10: Liam Mozzyani, William Windsor

Our 10 A class also completed the ANCQ National Chemistry Competition where one of our students, Harry Ellis, was successful in achieving a Distinction, placing him in the top 10% of the state!

It is wonderful to see so many great results from our young scientists here at St Gregory’s College.

Victor Chang Science Award – Sanjiv Weerasingham Year 11

Each year the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute present an award recognising Year 11 students who have achieved at the highest level in Science, and who are encouraged to pursue a career in Science.

Sanjiv Weerasingham of Year 11 was the recipient from St Gregory’s College. He finished 1st in both Biology and Chemistry this year. Sanjiv has a proven record of achievement, since Year 7 he has been ranked first or second in Science. Entering external Science competitions, Sanjiv has received either a Distinction or High Distinction in the Big Science Competition in his junior years.

The award ceremony was held on 18th November at Camden Council Administration Building where Sanjiv was presented his award by the Mayor of Camden, Theresa Fedeli and Dr Gavin Chapman, a developmental biologist from the Victor Chang Institute.

Dr Gavin spoke about his research into identifying genes that when mutated cause birth defects such as congenital heart disease. The award provides an opportunity for Sanjiv, in December,  to spend time at the institute to learn about its activities and career pathways in medical research.

Congratulations to Sanjiv on this achievement.

TerraCycle used writing instruments recycling program

The St Gregory’s College Community has joined up to the "TerraCycle used writing instruments recycling program” .

For every 1kg of accepted items we collect, our Community will receive $1 in donation points which will go into our Marist Solidarity Fund.

Please see the list of accepted waste below. Have a look around your home and office (especially if you work in an office environment) and send your waste into the College.  There will be collection points in both the Junior and Senior school. This will be an ongoing initiative and your support will be greatly appreciated.
