IPSSO Sport Report - Finals!

Senior Cricket

IPSSO Finals for Senior Cricket took place at St Gregory’s this year, and thankfully we were blessed with a lovely day for play. IPSSO Finals see the northern region schools take on the southern region schools (St Greg’s included) and then play on to a grand final. In the semi final the team took on All Saints College. St Greg’s batted and bowled with skills and smarts, but unfortunately went down to the winning team from the northern region, 52 runs to 66. The final play off for third and fourth saw St Greg’s against William Carey Christian College. The team bowled and fielded very well, taking 5 wickets in total. Ethan Mc McGlynn was strong in his first stint behind the wicket for the year. There were some very tidy catches, with a very notable one from Andrew Nothdurfter. St Greg’s was victorious, earning them 3rd place overall, winning by 4 runs. The final score was 52-48.

A big congratulations to the whole team. Throughout the year they shared leaderships roles, deciding batting and bowling orders, initiating the toss with their opponents and providing tips to each other. All of the boys displayed sportsmanship and determination in each and every game. Congratulations on an excellent season and thank you for helping to me to develop my cricketing skills too!

Junior Oztag

This week saw St Gregory’s host the finals of the Summer Junior IPSSO Oztag Competition for 2019. The day began with a semi final match against the second placed team from the northern division, Thomas Hassall Anglican College. St Gregory’s began the match with quick tries to Olivia Jardine and Denham Tsagalas. After the half time break, St Gregory’s extended their lead with some great cross field kicks and slick passing to take the match out 10-6. This then set them up for a grand final match against Wollondilly Anglican, whom had beaten them 3 weeks prior by 1 point.

The grand final was a very closely contested match, which began with Wollondilly scoring first. St Gregory’s then hit back with a number of tries of their own and went into half-time trailing 4-3. The second half began with Wollondilly extending their lead to 3 points, however, St Gregory’s hit back with tries to Olivia Jardine and Lucy Stewart to take the lead 7-6. The last 7 minutes were very tense with both teams going try for try. St Gregory’s finished very strongly, however Wollondilly held their nerve to take out the match 10-8, resulting in them being the 2019 Junior IPSSO Oztag champions.

I would like to congratulate the team on a fantastic season. All players put in 100% each and every week and showed great skill and sportsmanship throughout the whole season. On behalf of the team, I would also like to extend a special thanks to the parents for turning up to support the team each week. Having you there meant so much to the students. Congratulations to all players and teachers involved for a great season!

Senior Oztag

After finishing in first place in our Region our Senior Oztag team faced one of our biggest challenges yet coming up against Georges River Grammar in the semi final. From the moment after kick off, both teams knew it was going to be an intense battle to earn a spot in the grand final. The scoreboard was neck and neck but in true St Greg’s spirit our gutsy determination shone through and we won 10 - 8.

With adrenaline pumping and excitement levels at an all time high we began the grand final game with confidence. We were quick in attack and strong in defence with some great skill and teamwork on display. There were many examples of selfless play where players offloaded in attack to ensure that we scored maximum points to secure a grand final victory.

In the end it was a convincing win against Wollondilly with the final score being 15 - 4. It was a well-deserved result for us after all their hard work and commitment this season. The team were presented with their medals and proudly sang a rendition of the Sub Tuum.

As their coach, I have been extremely proud watching our team evolve and the wonderful sportsmanship they have shown at all times.

Finally, many thanks to our supporters who have continually offered their encouragement throughout the season.
