A passion for compassion

Compassion is the theme for 2021 at St Mary's College.

Compassion is when we see someone experiencing a hardship and we want to do something to ease their pain or paint a rainbow for them to see.

How can we show a passion for compassion in our daily lives? We've outlined some ideas below to get you thinking and sharing with the important people in your life.

Start with yourself

Be kind to yourself, praise yourself, focus on your strengths and have regular self-care. We need to care for ourselves in order to be able to care for others.

Non-verbal communication

Use your body to communicate as well as your words. Think about what you're trying to communicate and try non-verbal cues such as a smile, eye contact and deep listening.

Healthy touch

Would you like a hug? That was great, would you like a high five? Try playing card games—this is a great way to engage in healthy touch.

Show kindness

Give kindness away without expecting anything in return. Any act, no matter how small, is always warmly received.

Respect privacy

An offer of support is all you need to do to show you care. If someone confides in you, don't share their personal information—it's not yours to share.

Consider your words

Think before you speak. Compassion is about paying attention to the present with a caring attitude.
