Environment Group News

Ms Kathryn Badini

The Environment Group is a relatively new chapter in the College which is focused on “caring for the hive.” We aim to achieve this by increasing awareness of environmental issues in our local and global community and promoting and implementing initiatives that reduce the impact of our College community on the natural world.

Our biggest undertaking has been the implementation of the new bin system. We now have four bin streams at the College: yellow for co-mingled recycling; maroon for organics; red for general rubbish; and blue for paper and cardboard recycling.

The system launched last April, and in just nine months we have been able to divert 50.44% or 60T of rubbish from landfill. A huge achievement, especially given the fact we used to only divert 13%.

Our goal for 2021 is to divert 60% of our rubbish and hopefully reduce our overall rubbish total. We are off to a good start – our diversion rate in January was 72.50%. Everyone is encouraged to do their bit so our 2021 goal can be achieved.

We are also participating in Clean Up Australia Day with a whole host of activities –

  • Senior Clean-Up – Sunday 28 February at Bokarina – Wurtulla on the Sunshine Count. We will be partnering with Mt St Michael’s and the Sunshine Coast City Council for this event
  • Primary Clean Up – Friday 5 March at Downfall Creek. Organised by our environmental leaders
  • Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day – Friday 5 March. eWaste drive in the morning and encouraging the boys to clean our own school community

If your son is interested in participating in any of the above events or wants to be involved in the Environment Group, please email Ms Badini at badinik@marash.qld.edu.au.
