Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Time flies. We are past the halfway mark of our AFL, cricket and volleyball season. Our swimmers are making their final preparations for the upcoming AIC Swimming Championships, and we are already looking ahead to next term’s sporting program, which includes Rugby, Football, Cross-Country and Chess. There are certainly plenty of opportunities for our students to become involved. By now all students from Years 5-12 should have signed on via Student Café or the Parent Portal for their Term 2 Sports. We ask all parents to ensure that their son has completed this and you have approved via the Parent Portal. This information helps us plan and prepare for the season ahead.

On behalf of the College, we wish all swimmers the very best in their preparations for the upcoming AIC Swimming Championships on Friday. Unfortunately, due to Chandler's COVID safe plan, we won’t have any spectators, apart from ticketed parents, attending the carnival. We understand this is a disappointment for our swimmers who have been preparing for this day for months, in some cases all year. Regardless of the lack of physical support present at Chandler, please remember the whole College is behind you!

Our swim coaches and managers are making the final preparations for the annual AIC Swimming Championships. The College has much respect for the many swimmers who have trained long and hard in the pool spanning many months. The early rises and countless laps are not seen by many. The self-discipline and motivation these swimmers possess as they go about their training is to be admired. On behalf of the College, we wish all squad members the very best at the AIC Swimming Championships.

We know our boys are looking forward to putting on the blue and gold this weekend as we take on Iona in our team sports. As always, we ask every Ashgrovian to stand up and be counted this weekend to ensure we perform at our best.

GETTING READY FOR TERM 2

Here are some important things to consider in preparation for Term 2 sport:

  • Playing uniform – football/rugby boots, football shirt/rugby jersey, football/rugby shorts and football/rugby socks
  • Protective gear – shin guards, mouthguards, headgear, shoulder pads
  • Water bottle – each student should have their own NAMED water bottle to be brought to training and games

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Term 1 sports take priority over any Term 2 preparations. If there is a clash, students are expected to maintain their commitments to their Term 1 sport.

Please below for some more important reminders:

  1. Presentation: How we present ourselves is a strong reflection of our school. Saturday sport is the ideal medium to create a positive public image. This involves ALL students wearing the correct uniform to and from AIC matches. Please see the uniform section below for an example of the appropriate attire for Cricket and Volleyball.
  2. Training: Coaches spend a lot of time planning seasons and training sessions for our teams. It is only fair that students are organised, on time and ready to train for every session.
  3. Absence: Students are not to send a message about missing training through another student. Coaches are to be contacted directly by email regarding any absence from training. Please email your coach in advance about why you will miss training.
  4. Any questions relating directly to the respective sports programs should be directed to the relevant coordinators:

It was a fantastic weekend for the MCA cricket program, winning 10/12 aggregate games setting up an exciting finish to the AIC Aggregate race. Many thanks to our superb ground staff who managed to produce three turf wickets despite the constant rain.

Our 1st XI was too good for arch-rivals Padua College putting in a dominant bowling performance.

Below are a few words from our 1st XI captain Jacob Kumaru:

Round 4 was very successful. On a challenging wicket, our batsmen struggled to get away at any point, with Nathan Armitage top-scoring (18 off 24 balls), helped out by Jakub Bennett (15 off 59 balls), Jacob Kumaru (13* off 41 balls) and Jaxon Barwell (13 off 32 balls). This allowed us to scamper to 128 all out in the 43rd over.

The bowling performance from the boys was relentless, rolling Padua for 68 all out after 28.1 overs. Baxter White led the bowlers with early scalps finishing on 4/32 from 9 overs, and was complimented by Marcus Zipf 3/9 off 5 overs and Jacob Kumaru 3/19 from 8.1 overs. This 60-run win puts us in a solid position for the coming rounds.

The mighty 10A's found themselves back in the winner's circle, being able to restrict Padua to 102 after 35 overs. Superb bowling from Tom Davies, leading the attack with 3/18. The boys were then able to chase the total in 23 overs off the back of a quick-fire 40 from Fletcher Beasley.

9A's make it back-to-back wins as they prepare for a huge showdown this week against Iona College. Ashgrove lost the toss, but it proved to work in their favour setting a solid 6/170 with even contributions from Lachlan McCall, Leo Henry, Sam Lewis and James Brandon. A slow start from our bowlers kept Padua in the fight; however, back-to-back tight spells from Louis Morris and captain Sam Lewis alongside fast bowlers Flynn Cleary and William McGauley ensured Padua would fall short in their chase. A flurry of late wickets secured a 40-run victory to Iona.

The MCA 8A team arrived at the ground with optimism as the previous two days provided constant rain. At the toss, MCA elected to bowl with cloud cover overhead and a wicket with plenty of life in it. The bowlers struggled to win the first session with ill-discipline with the ball in hand. The spinners were introduced early onto the sticky wicket, and the runs dried up for the Padua team. The score a drink read 1/51, with MCA hoping to chase a score below 100. However, the post drinks session proved to be Padua's as the MCA bowlers struggled to bowl to their field and put down three crucial chances. The score to chase was 130. MCA was confident, and the openers looks settled after 4 overs; however, George Philp lost his wicket, and a flurry of wickets fell. It was all too much for the MCA team as we were bowled out for 100. However, we have learned plenty and look forward to the challenge of Iona this week.

Unfortunately, our 7A's went down to Padua in the final over. Padua won the toss and decided to bat first. Benji Blaszczyk, Sid Roberts, Oliver Hayes and Harry Clay all bowled exceptionally well as we kept the Padua to 120 off their 30 overs. Our chase didn't begin well with two early wickets, but some courageous and gritty batting from Oliver Hayes and Ben Sinclair saw our boys needing 12 runs off the final over. Unfortunately, we went down by 5 runs, but I'm so proud of the "never give up" attitude shown by the boys. Watch out Iona...... here we come!!!

This weekend is our junior round against Iona College; we look forward to featuring all our colour teams in next week's newsletter. Good luck to all teams in Round 5.

AFL

MCA1st XVIII

The boys were excited about the game vs Padua with the new Andrews Cameron Cup up for grabs for the first time, plus the exposure the game received on the Brisbane Lions website was something they were looking forward too. Starting the game strong with the first goal to Jackson Grounds, then Padua kicked the next 4 goals. With a rearranged forward line that saw Dwayne Ludwick play deep in attack and Jackson Grounds play centre half-forward, the boys scored 4 goals to 2 in the 2nd quarter to go into the main break 6 points down. We held the momentum in the third quarter in the boys' best display of football for the year, kicking another 4 goals and Dwayne Ludwick putting in an entry for the goal of the year. Up by 13 points at the last change, the boys dug deep to hold on and outscore Padua by 1 point in the last quarter, winning by 14 points in hot and humid conditions. It was pleasing to see the effort from all boys who took to the field, with the best players being - Dwayne Ludwick, Patrick Mahony, Will Jennings, Mason Houlihan, Tommy Pfitzner, Cooper Thomas. Goal scorers were: 3-Dwayne Ludwick, Jackson Grounds, 1- Munroe Wood, Jack Urquart, Riley Chugg, Sean O’Hara.

MCA Intermediates 8/9

MCA 8/9s were up for a battle playing the undefeated Padua team. The first quarter was against the wind at the big Sandgate Oval, and Padua gained a few cheap goals before the MCA lads settled in for the fight. Big ruckman Alex McNamara will wear a shiner all week after an early collision in which he still took the mark, but had to spend the rest of the game recuperating. Ben Caughley then took over in ruck and was working hard through the middle and ably supported by his on-ballers in Cournane, Milner and Harper. The backs were under pressure for much of the quarter, and four goals down was not a bad result against a decent breeze. Howard, Scarce, Pittman and T Williams working very well together in defence. The second and third quarters were a tight tussle, and the Eagles were holding their own, going goal for goal with the Padua team. Goals to J Williams and Milner and some close misses saw the team 4 goals down at the last change. The last quarter proved a bridge too far with the Padua team running out the game with too much skill and experience to win a well-fought game by 7 goals. All parents and coaches were super impressed with the effort and commitment of MCA 8/9s players to push this unbeaten (for 3 seasons) Padua team. Best for MCA were Caughley, Howard, Milner, T Williams, Jacob Harper, Bailey Scarce and Oscar Pittman.

MCA 7A vs Padua

Round four saw the 7A's take on a tough Padua side. After being defeated last round by Villanova the boys wanted to bounce back, and they did just that. From the first bounce until the final siren, the intensity and intent that our boys displayed was first class and ultimately resulting in a MCA win (MCA: 50 PAD: 14). Round four was a massive positive for the season, and the boys will look to build momentum heading into the back end of the season.

MCA 7B vs St Laurence's

The boys came up against a powerful St Laurences line up, proving to be a tough battle. The Marist Eagles worked hard to compete against this physical side. Struggles appeared when they continued to win the ruck contest and drive the ball up the ground, putting pressure onto our defenders. Our structure broke down because of the extra work the boys had to do to help their teammates. Really solid defensive work from Oliver, Van and Will, who were also our best players, significantly impacted the game. We will reset at training and work on aspects in the game in which we need to improve for next weeks game. The final score came was 86-0, St Laurence's way, which proved tough for the boys to take on.

We look forward to another tough challenge next week where we will hopefully come out on top.
