From Our Classrooms

YEAR 5 REPORT
On Friday 16 November, the Grade 5s took a train into the city to participate in a street art tour, linked to our Unit of Inquiry, ‘How We Express Ourselves’ (The Arts).
We walked to Murrumbeena Train Station and caught a train to Flinders Street, full of excitement and anticipation. When we arrived at Federation Square, each class had a tour guide. They showed us some fossils in the ground of Federation Square and explained how Fed. Square itself is such a significant piece of art! They explained some of the history of Melbourne, including why the streets had certain names and why it was set out like a grid. It was really fascinating to hear all this information about our own city.
We meandered our way to Hosier Lane, where the main street art is. The tour guides explained the history of the five predominate different types of art in the lane ways; sculptures, stencils, writing, posters, and mural.
We walked into many other different laneways, heading through China Town and then looping back to Federation Square. After our guided tour, we headed inside to A.C.M.I. and experienced some of the fun activities Screen World had to offer, including visual projections, optical illusions in dark rooms, the testing of computer games and various other technological wonders.
After our exciting experience, sadly, it was time to come back to school. From A.C.M.I., we walked back to Flinders Street Station and caught the train back to school. On the train, we talked and shared our thoughts of the excursion. When we got back to school, we couldn’t believe it was already 2:30 pm. It was an exciting and memorable day.
Thank you to the teachers for organising this excursion! A huge “thank you” also goes out to the parent helpers who came along for the day because these types of excursions would be so difficult to run without their kind help. We loved chatting with the parent helpers and hearing their perspectives on the artwork, too.
We truly appreciated your help!
