Stage 1 Lime & Mint

In Stage 1 Lime & Mint we have been learning about fractured fairy tales. We have been looking at Prince Cinders in detail and comparing it with other well known fairy tales. We are looking forward to writing our own fairy tales towards the end of the Term.

In Maths, we have looked at Ordinal Numbers, Counting by fives & ten's and using money. We have also been busy getting our artworks ready for the Guyra Show display.

Australian Rugby 7s visit

On Friday 12th February Guyra Central School was lucky enough to meet the Captain of the Australian Rugby 7s team Nick Malouf and fullback for the Waratahs Will Maddocks. They came to tell us about their rugby career and how they became a professional player. They told all of their stories about Rugby and answered our questions. They taught us how to play the game and what the rules are. They gave is some tips and tricks on how to pass and kick the ball. At the end they gave us a sticker each on how to become an Olympian and also generously gave their autographs and had photos taken with students. It was a great experience for all students in years 3-10. We thank them for travelling to Guyra Central School and we wish them good luck for future years to come.

Science Escape Room

This week, Years 7 and 8 were challenged to escape the science laboratory by completing hands-on puzzles and projects. Mr Galvin (our Stage 4 Science teacher) and Mrs Lloyd (our wonderful Science Technician) prepared a sequence of great activities that both engaged and enraged students as they tried to build catapults, solve microscope puzzles and neutralise acids to reveal codes and clues. Paper boats sailed across windy waters, laden with carefully-selected cargo and UV-light was used to reveal the secret code to unlock the treasure chest full of lollies!!

Everyone really enjoyed the event which was made a success by the help of older students, Cordy and Dante Lloyd, Keith Landsborough and Naomi Hartes-Berry. Big thanks to Mr Galvin for bringing such a great initiative to the school.

Stage 2 Geography

On Tuesday the 16th of February, Mr Phil Jones was a visiting speaker in Stage 2 Rose and Stage 2 Crimson. Mr Jones came to speak to the Stage 2 classes about Vietnam. We have been learning about Australia's Neighbours in Geography this term, and also exploring a literacy unit based on Anh Do's book The Happy Refugee. Anh Do lived in Vietnam before he came to Australia on a refugee boat.

Our students had some excellent questions for Mr Jones including-

Tom Ward- What was the most fascinating/weird thing you came across in Vietnam?

The network of tunnels under the ground from the Vietnam War.

Dean Rumbel - What would be the most popular tourist attraction?

The boat tours on Ha Long Bay.

William Vidler - What time of year did you visit? Have you been there when it's Lunar New Year?

Mr Jones had visited three times for one month to write High School Geography resources in January and once in April for a holiday. He had been there in the lead up to Lunar New Year.

Jack Watters- What sorts of things did you see on a motorcycle?

People moving house who had their wardrobe on the back of their motorcycle, a pallet of bamboo plants on the back of a motorcycle, and a family of 6 people on a motorbike!

Stage 2 were an excellent audience, showing our core values of Pride, Respect and Responsibility during this learning opportunity. They are currently completing Vietnam projects which will be on display at the end of the week in our classroom.

Show Excursion

Our K-6 primary students attended the Guyra Show on Friday 19th February 2021 to  look at the pavillion and to watch a few of the show events.

All of our students had a fantastic time looking at what the 2021 Guyra show has to offer and looking at all of their wonderful show entries in the pavillion.

Each of our students are to be congratulated for displaying pride, respect and responsibility representing our school at the show.
