Our school captains at the City of Kingston Junior Mayor Conference with the Mayor of Kingston, Hadi Saab.
On Thursday the 25th of May the School Captains went to The City of Kingston Town Hall in Moorabbin for the Junior Mayor Conference. Each year the schools in the City of Kingston participate in an election which involves presenting a two minute speech to all the other participants on a specific issue. This year we had to work as a team and present on the topic of mental health for young people. We worked hard to create our three initiatives for mental health for young people in the City of Kingston and presented them to a large audience andThe Mayor, Cr Hadi Saab. The Deputy Mayor, Chris Hill and the Junior Mayor from 2022,Eli were also in attendance. Twenty-eight schools from the City of Kingston sent four attendees to participate in the conference. Whilst we didn’t get nominated to be the Junior or Deputy Junior Mayor we were lucky to be one of eleven schools voted onto the Junior Mayor Council. We were also fortunate enough to meet the Mayor of the City of Kingston, Cr Hadi Saab. We all had a great time rehearsing for the event and are grateful for the experience. We celebrated National Simultaneous Story last week. The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young was read simultaneously in libraries, schools, homes and children's facilities all over the country and the world! Here are some of our students participating in NSS at OLA.
Today our F.I.R.E Carriers went on a Cultural Walk at The Briars in Mount Martha! Our amazing guide Hudson from Living Culture was fantastic! As we walked we stopped to listen to him tell us about the wide variety of uses for the plants and trees that were right in front of us! Plants that our First Nations people have used for thousands of years to eat, remedy headaches, provide nutrition, use to fish and make ropes and spears from and so much more. We learnt so much and even got to taste a few of the plants! We have such a rich history right on our doorstep- what a fabulous experience for our F.I.R.E Carriers!
On Thursday 1 June the Grade 1 and 2 student went on an excursion to The Gould League Sustainability & Education Centre. Students participated in hands on, interactive activities and explored how living things are connected. They examined the changes plants undergo as they grow and discovered the key features that help plants survive in our fascinating world. A few of our students shared that their favourite part of the day was digging up bugs with a shovel!
We celebrate achievements at OLA every day in the classroom. Outstanding achievement is celebrated at every assembly in the front of the school. Congratulations to all the students who received an award last week.
