Unit 1 Environmental Science

Suzanne Matejin (Learning Leader and VCE Environmental Science teacher)

On Monday the 17 February, the VCE Unit1 Environmental Science class travelled to the Marine and Fresh Water Discovery Centre, which is located on the shores of Swan Bay in Queenscliff. The focus of the day was to study animal and plant adaptations, classification, biodiversity, human impacts and issues affecting Port Phillip Bay.

The students visited the aquarium at the Centre, and participated in a cruise conducted by Fisheries Victoria out on Port Phillip Bay. While on board the vessel, a small sledge was deployed that brought up material from the bay. With the assistance of our Fisheries Wildlife officer on board, students sorted the marine species into groups so that they could be identified and classified. The cruise also took us across the bay to a colony of Australian Fur Seals located at Chinaman’s Hat, and to Popes Eye, Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park, to learn about the colony of Australasian Gannets that breed there.

An amazing opportunity for our girls to learn about the importance of protecting our environment.
