Term 2 Week 1 Snapshot
Welcome to Home Learning
Home learning in Grade 4 will take place through Google Classroom. Students will be able to access their Google Classroom which has been set up by the class teacher. Most students were able to set their Google Classrooms up during Term 1. If your child does not have access to this already please contact the classroom teacher.
On Google Classroom the teachers will post a morning message, the daily schedule and any resources required for the day - such as videos or PDFs. Each day teachers will also ask students to submit some of their learning online. Students will be able to do this by clicking on the Classwork tab and then clicking on each assignment.
For more information please see the Welcome to Home Learning Slideshow.
We have also created a list of optional activities, which we have tried to ensure are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.
English
The tasks for the week will be posted daily on Google Classroom. An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:
READING
Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher.
- Procedural text annotation
- Identifying the purpose of procedural texts
- Describing the key features and structure of procedural texts
- Comparing and analysing a range of procedural texts
WRITING
Writing tasks for the first three days of term include:
- Reflecting on the holidays
- Writing a procedural text, take a photograph and submit to Google Classroom
- Locating a range of procedural texts from around the home to utilise during home learning
From the start of the term we will be writing procedural texts. We encourage students to use the writing cycle when writing to ensure they are continuously developing their writing.
The writing cycle consists of five stages:
1. Plan
2. Draft
3. Edit.
4. Revise
5. Publish
Note: Not all pieces need to be published. We encourage the students to write many different writing pieces which they revise and edit. At the end of a unit of work we ask students to choose their best piece to publish.
Mathematics
The tasks for the week will be posted daily on Google Classroom. A summary of tasks for Mathematics this week is as follows:
- Exploring different ways data can be represented
- Interpreting data displays online
- Explaining the purpose of different data displays
Unit of Inquiry
The tasks for the week will be posted daily on Google Classroom. A summary of tasks for our unit of inquiry this week is as follows:
- Identify how technology can help people by completing a word challenge by looking for definitions of words without help, a dictionary, an online search
- Explore the concepts of change and transformation by looking at a slide show and thinking carefully about the pictures and noticing connections.
- Look at technological inventions and brainstorm a list of problems that each of these have solved.
Wellbeing
Here are some ideas and resources to manage wellbeing during Home Learning:
- Cosmic Kids Yoga (YouTube channel)
- Smiling Mind (mindfulness app)
- Art Hub for kids (YouTube channel)
- Go Noodle
Home learning set up
Today we ask students to complete one task, to ensure that their home learning area is set up and they are ready to work for the week. Ideally this would be a dedicated area that would not need to be packed up each day, and is part of the general living space so that students still feel connected to their family and can easily access support if needed.
Students will also find this task on Google Classroom as an assignment.
Learning Intention: To create a productive home learning environment.
Find a space in the house where you want to work. Set up your area and take a photo or create a drawing of your work area. Label your photo or drawing showing all the important parts which help your learning environment. Think about:
- Light sources
- Furniture
- Distractions
- Equipment, etc.
At the bottom of your page or photo write at least 5 sentences reflecting on why this is a good home learning space for you.
Submit your page or photo on Google Classroom.
