Careers Update
Work Experience
Congratulations to the following students who completed work experience throughout Term 3. They developed employability skills while gaining valuable insight into their industry and occupation of interest, as well as important self-knowledge to help them make decisions about their futures.
CSIRO
- Ian D Souza, 12Y
- Shanina De Souza, 12Y
Shanina De Souza, 12Y: "My placement at the CSIRO was a fantastic opportunity to further explore areas in the vast fields of science and math that I knew I was interested in as well as other ones that I didn’t have much of an understanding of. This was particularly useful as a Year 12 student as it has informed my decision-making regarding university courses and further study.
We were given a chance to explore issues relating to energy and the role that data scientists play in this area and learn about the testing and research being conducted on materials, household devices and even viruses!
The more practical aspects of my time at the CSIRO gave me a chance to see real-life applications of concepts I had only read about in class. This ranged from experimenting with electron microscopes, conducting HPLC tests and handling printable solar panels.
I couldn’t be more thankful to the Careers Team for facilitating this experience and would highly encourage all students who are interested in pursuing science or math after high school to seek out a placement at the CSIRO as it offers a unique chance to interact with experts with a broad range of skills and from a multitude of departments".

The Hudson Institute

Melbourne Museum
Issy Simmons, 10I (pictured):
“My work experience at the Melbourne Museum was an amazing opportunity to gain more knowledge about what I like and to explore careers related to it. I met so many nice people and would highly recommend it for anyone thinking about doing it next year!”
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
- Amy Gao, 10C
- Diwen Chen, 10B
The University of Melbourne Science Program
- Klinton Huang, 10E (pictured): "This work experience was one of the best things I have done because it allowed me to experience what life is like as a researcher and I was given the opportunity to see some of the STEM courses that are available at The University of Melbourne."
- Laney Hubbard, 10E (pictured): "It was an incredible experience and I truly enjoyed collaborating with likeminded people and experts, and seeing a particle accelerator, helium ion microscope and sophisticated laboratory instruments. Learning about nano and quantum physics, gravitational waves and dark matter, and doing experiments revolving around the application of these theories has deepened my interest in science and further encouraged me to pursue a career in science".
Woolworths
- Casper Liu, 10F: “This work experience built my work ethic and and character a lot because you’re doing it for the experience and not getting paid. I grew as a person from this achievement and have realised I want to be my own boss one day. The best part was that I got a casual job from it!”
Work experience is an approved educational activity so does not affect your attendance.
If you are concerned about missing school, try to arrange your placement between 5th – 16th December, after Year 11 Jump Start.
VET Snapshot
Allanie Sanderson, 11G: Fashion Design and Technologies at Box Hill Institute
"I am learning skills and knowledge I need to successfully get a job in the Fashion Industry. I’ve learnt an array of different stitch types; seam types; garment details like multiple pockets, zips, and hems; and how to use the basic elements of garments to create my own.
I’ve explored the design elements and principles that are chosen and manipulated when designing a garment. I’ve learnt to draw designs on paper and how to express my designs in industry formats that replicate the process of pitching and selling my designs.
This subject is incredibly fun, and I enjoy expressing my creativity in my practical works such as when I designed and detailed my own tote bag. The practical side is amazing because I have access to industry-standard sewing machines and overlockers. I especially enjoy the atmosphere because we all enjoy learning about fashion so are fully engaged in classes. The small size of my class means we have all become friends and work collaboratively which creates a very positive learning environment.
Choosing this VET subject has been extremely helpful as I now know if this industry is the right direction for me and how I am suited to it. It has given me a deeper insight into what career pathway I may want to explore and continue later in my life".
