9x5 Exhibition

Year 10 - 9x5 Impressionist Exhibition  - Small Works, BIG Impressions!

On Tuesday 6th September, Miss Brewer and Year 10 Studio Art students put on a gala event that will go down in Box Hill history!  The exhibition featured 45 small impressionist artworks inspired by their site visit to nearby Gardiner's Creek where the great Impressionist painters of the 1880's painted the landscape more than 130 years ago.

The theme of the exhibit was taken from the original 9 x 5 Exhibition where painters like Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Jane Sutherland painted on 9x5 inch cigar box lids.  These bohemian artists would camp next to a creek just near our school every weekend for three years painting ‘plein air’ (open air).

Miss Brewer took students on a walking excursion to the Box Hill Artist Park.  Students gathered inspiration and painted their own impressionist landscapes on 9 x 5“ wooden boards.  They curated, installed, promoted and catered the event.  They even invited the head Curator from Box Hill Town Hall, Jacquie Nichols-Reeves to open the Exhibition. Whitehorse newspaper and are also going to do an article on it, so watch out for the story in the local newspaper in October!

We are extremely proud of every single student.  They made speeches, set up/packed up the event, served elderberry champagne and even did their own live music!  Everyone had an absolute blast.  Mum’s & Dad’s and friends were blown away to see their child's artwork showcased at a gala event that students could truly make their own.  See below for some of the feedback received about the night....
