Inquiry Centre

Curriculum

Well done to everyone as they settled into regular school this week, after a very busy Weeks 1 and 2 with swimming!

During Reading sessions this week we have been inferring characters, settings and characters’ feelings. Students even got to infer which teacher’s bag was being shown, using their prior knowledge of the Year 1/2 teachers. We also focused on making sure we used the evidence from the text and our prior knowledge to back up our inferences when explaining them to our teachers and peers.

In Writing, we have been thinking about the structure of narratives. We read a range of narratives and looked at the structure that different authors use when writing their stories. We brainstormed ideas for a narrative from the topic ‘found’ and then created lists of characters, problems and endings for our stories. We finished off the week by plotting these on our own story graphs and considering the structure of our own narratives.

Our maths sessions in Week 3 were all about multiplicative thinking again. We focused on the language we use with multiplicative thinking and continued to build on the strategies we know for solving multiplication problems. We used hands-on materials to create groups, used number lines to practise skip counting with repeated addition and even practised creating our own number lines all the way to 100!

Our Guided Inquiry this week was all about sounds again. We discussed the tempo, pitch and instruments used for different sounds and considered how they make us feel. As students listened to a range of sounds they had the opportunity to draw or move to the sounds, taking into consideration the tempo and pitch. It was great to see our students’ creativity!

In Science this week we started exploring States of Matter. During the next few weeks we will be conducting experiments that investigate a range of solids, liquids and gases. Students may even come home with some exciting things to share!

We are looking forward to a fun Week 4!

Pupil of the Week

1/2DT: George K

For using your creativity while brainstorming ideas in writing. You planned an interesting narrative with a funny beginning, middle and end. Well done!

1/2G: Tina W

For demonstrating perseverance during Maths sessions when learning about groups of. It is great to see you exploring different strategies and using Maths key words. Keep it up, Tina!

1/2K: Phoebe R

For demonstrating perseverance and curiosity during our Mathematics sessions. You used counters and a whiteboard to show evidence of your understanding of multiplication. Amazing effort Phoebe!

1/2M: Logan H -

For demonstrating perseverance during our Maths sessions this week. You have worked hard to understand multiplication in different ways from making arrays to writing your problems vertically. Wonderful effort Logan!

1/2SS: Chloe L -

For showing great improvement when writing. You used perseverance and creativity to create your narrative writing piece.

Well done Chloe!
