Curriculum

"On your marks, get set, GO!” Mrs Brisbane’s voice boomed over the microphone at the Athletics Track last Friday. It was the annual Athletics Day carnival and students from Years 3-6 participated in a range of different sports and showcased above-ground skills now that swimming lessons are all over! The sun came out mid-morning which was a happy surprise and welcome from the cold, frosty morning. Split into age group & gender, students rotated through high jump, discus, 200m sprints and many more throughout the fun-filled day! The students displayed wonderful comments of encouragement and used their inner coach to complete the sports. It was nice to have Mrs Streitberger come down and help time some of our final races. Well done to all competitors and a massive thank you to Jacob, Ada and Zoe some of our sports leaders who supported Mrs Butterworth to set up the track early in the morning. And of course, another big thank you to Mrs Butterworth who organised the whole event and ensured everyone had a great time!

In Reading sessions last week, students completed 4 rotations that focused on different reading skills such as paraphrasing, predicting and clarifying meaning by researching the Commonwealth & Commonwealth Games. With all students choosing a book last week for the website, it was time to complete the first activity to be uploaded and presented onto Abobe Spark Page! The focus was on predicting or questioning their chosen text. I wonder if these predictions will be accurate or if the questions will be answered.

In Writing sessions, students began to draft their debating arguments with their team. Students ensured they ordered themselves and looked at persuasive devices and structures to correctly form their arguments. With the topics heavily focused on ‘Space’ - research proved important as students collected evidence for their elaborations on each topic. This week, students will complete these, receive feedback from their peers and begin practising and timing their speech. The formal debate process is set to begin at the end of the week or early in Week 5. They will all be uploaded to SeeSaw for families to watch but practising at home beforehand is a good idea!

In Mathematics, students completed a Rich Assessment Task called ‘The Butterfly House’ where they demonstrated their mathematical thinking and problem solving to work through multiplicative questions- these will be uploaded and marked this week. For the remainder of the sessions, students chose whether to attend mini master classes focusing on multiplication skills or to work on creating a Butterfly House of their own using volume calculations. This open-ended task allows for students to collaborate together and share their understanding as well as allowing teachers to run more mini sessions and teach through the activity. This week we continue to look at multiplication and division together. Any times tables practice & Manga High activities going over these skills is encouraged!

For Guided Inquiry last week, the Leadership Centre came together and with Mr Dix’s guidance, we began to explore the idea of civilisations and what they need to “survive”

and “thrive”. As we continue throughout Guided Inquiry sessions this term, the aim is for students to think critically about different civilisations over the years and if a new one was to be created where would it be and what would it need?

Have a wonderful week,

The Leadership Centre Teachers
