August Careers News
Last week the year 10 students embarked on work experience across a wide range of industries. It was an absolute joy to go out and visit some of the students and see them immersed in the workforce, and the positive feedback I received from employers made me proud to be a representative of the school.
While not all students were working in industries they have an interest in pursuing, all developed many transferrable skills including communication, cooperation, independence, problem solving and adaptability that will assist them throughout the years to come. I’d like to thank all the staff who assisted in getting the students out on work experience and visiting them throughout the week, and also the families who supported the students in finding placements in what was a very difficult year.
It was also wonderful to see so many families attend the Future Pathways evening on Monday 1st August. Valuable opportunities to meet with various VCE subject teachers and tertiary institutions were on offer, as well as information about VCE and VTAC for parents from years 9-12. If you were unable to attend the evening, the VTAC and future job market PowerPoints I presented are both available to view here. I also strongly encourage Year 12 students and their parents to register for the VTAC webinars listed below.
VTAC webinars
Year 12 Students, parents, carers and supporters are warmly welcome to book in for VTAC's information webinars. There will be two types of presentation on offer:
More information will be provided on the website shortly, and additional sessions can be scheduled if these book out.

VTAC information
As of Monday August 1st, Year 12 students can now open their VTAC accounts and start applying for 2023 tertiary courses, SEAS and scholarships. Timely applications close on September 29th and SEAS applications close on October 7th. There are many helpful resources for Year 12 students and their families on the Firefly page here, and these are being updated regularly.
Students and families in years 10-12 can find relevant VTAC guides for their year level on the VTAC website here. These guides can assist with subject selection and planning for tertiary education.
Early entry programs
Many universities, including Latrobe, ACU and Swinburne, offer early entry programs that can be applied for throughout June-September (depending on the university). Applying for these courses means that students may receive an offer to a course based on their year 11 results and co-curricular involvement prior to sitting exams in October/November, which can alleviate a lot of pressure. Information regarding early entry programs can be found on Firefly here.

Casper test: for students interested in studying undergraduate Teaching degrees in 2023
Most universities offering undergraduate teaching courses will be requiring students sit the Casper online test as part of the selection into teaching degrees in 2023. Students are encouraged to browse VTAC and determine which courses will require the Casper for selection. Students might also like to browse CASPer – how it works and have a look at some sample scenarios too. Students are encouraged to watch this useful YouTube clip.
Please note that the final date that the Casper can be taken in order to be eligible for December offers is November 13th. Please register to complete the Casper test here.
Please keep up to date with information on the Future Pathways Firefly page, and particularly the weekly careers newsletter, which is uploaded each Friday.
