Remembrance Day - November 11, 2020
Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of hostilities of World War I, the signing of the armistice, which occurred on November 11th, 1918 - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the eleventh month.
On the first anniversary of the armistice, in 1919, one minute's silence instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony. After the end of World War II in 1945, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day as an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead.
In 1997, Governor-General, Sir William Deane, issued a proclamation formally declaring 11th November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australian to observe one minute's silence at 11 am on 11th November each year, to remember all those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
Remembering
They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
we will remember them.
We will remember them.
