Magis report

This coming Wednesday the Magis 2020 Awards Breakfast will be held in the College library commencing at 7:30am.  More than 70 students from all year groups have won awards and parents of these students have been emailed an invitation. The program begins with a light breakfast at 7:30am. The information flyer is attached with this newsletter report. A summary of major Awards presented will be in next week’s report.

John XIII College is competing for the first time in the International Debating Competition which includes teams from Asia, Canada, New Zealand and other Australia states.  Our first debate is against Pymble Ladies College and the Year 8 team involved will be Gemma Bailey, Thomas Syminton and Jacob Davila with Max Watt  as reserve in round one. Results will be in next week’s newsletter.

Other major Magis competitions this term will include Ethics Olympiad which has been announced previously, and the Quest competition in which John XXIII will nominate teams from Years 7, 8 and 10. This excellent event will take place on 19 and 20 November. As usual,  day one will involved lessons from top university experts in the areas of Science, HASS and Mathematics. This event normally takes place at the University of Western Australia but due to Covid-19, it will take place via Zoom instead, as will both International Debating and Ethics Olympiad.

We are less than three weeks from the Magis Personal Project Display opening which will take place on Thursday 12 November in the College Library. We look to forward to seeing a range of exciting projects from the Magis Year 7 class.

Finally, best wishes to all Year 12 students sitting for WACE Examinations next week.  The support of this group for the inaugural Magis House Academic Championship was remarkable, and Ben Linsten has been a wonderful Magis Captain, strongly supported by Year 12 committee members Alex Panther, Nick Brennan and Lorian Marshall.
