Language & Culture Program

Kii, Deadly TPS community, biladu-njan wat/how are you all? And in the words of my Yawuru language...Ngaji gurrjin/Hello everyone!

How exciting it is to be back at school! I am now back teaching Foundation to Year 2s, face to face, albeit with a mask on!

However, I am continuing to teach Years 3 - 6 from home, via ‘Aunty Terri TV’ with Mirella assisting in the Koorie Room with the students. This has been very successful, with Mirella and I working together and team teaching all 3-6 classes. We even managed to conduct a couple of successful three-way sessions connecting Atticus from 3/4B, who like me, has been working from home, and the rest of the class. The picture below shows us getting set up for the first session, before his classmates came into the room. The students were all excited to see each other!

This focus for Term Four will be: deepening our understanding of the NAIDOC theme - ‘ALWAYS WAS. ALWAYS WILL BE.’ through investigations of First Nations peoples and aspects of their cultures, as well as some scientific evidence that verifies First Nations people’s longevity of time and place on this continent, and also by continuing our learning journey of the Wurundjeri seasons in Melbourne. We will continue to practise previously taught Woiwurrung language. Years 3-6 will focus on learning new vocabulary and phrases that are related to this term’s topics. Years F-2s will learn new vocabulary related to body parts.

We started the term off by revisiting the Wurundjeri story ‘The Creation of Birrarung (Yarra River) and Port Phillip Bay, and learning about the Boon Wurrung story ‘The Filling of the Bay: Time of Chaos’. Included below are some examples of student artwork based on these stories.

Keep on being the ‘Burndap-dhak/Deadly’ students and families that you all are!
