Writing and Spelling
Throughout Term Four, the Level One students will be focusing on the two writing genres of ‘Procedural Texts’ and ‘Poetry’, whilst also having time to experiment creatively with their own genre of writing during Sustained Writing sessions. The Procedural Writing Unit will link strongly to our Inquiry Science Unit and the Measurement and Geometry Units we will explore in Mathematics, where students will partake in real-life experiments and experiences, providing them with authentic writing seeds. The Poetry unit will allow the students to apply their understanding of the world around them, using inspiration and knowledge of their environment and resources to create a range of poems, including; Cinquain, Shape and Rhyme. The ‘VOICES’ menu will provide scope and focus for the students by explicitly learning key strategies throughout the term linking to author’s Voice, Organisation, Ideas, Conventions, Excellent Word Choice and Sentence Fluency.
Spelling will also continue to be implemented through explicit teaching of phonics and by engaging with the ‘Spelling Inquiry’ process. Personalised spelling words are authentic spelling misconceptions that are identified within a student’s writing piece and practised using the ‘Look, Say, Name, Check’ strategy.
What you can do to support your child at home:
- Seek out opportunities where their child may apply their understanding of Procedural texts and Poetry at home. For example, when cooking a new recipe, making Lego, reading a book or singing musical rhymes.
- Ensure your child practises their personal spelling words using the ‘Look, Say, Name, Check’ strategy for their Home Learning.
