Reading and Viewing

Our whole school approach to Reading (CAFÉ) continues to evolve during Term Four. The menus are prominently displayed in all of the Level One learning spaces with personalised goals set aside for individual students. These goals fall under the categories of Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expand Vocabulary, which are visible and accessible for all students to learn new strategies, develop and consolidate their reading skills.

Some of the strategies students will learn this term include:

  • Determine the author’s purpose
  • Identify the main idea and supporting details
  • Make a picture or mental image
  • Pay attention to punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody
  • Retell the story in sequence

Students take home books to read every night. In order to support your child at home, you may ask your child what reading strategy they have learnt during the day and encourage them to explain it to you. This is an effective way for them to consolidate their learning by sharing it with you. When your child reads aloud, take notice how they read to you. Do they read like a ‘Robot’, reading one word at a time, or are they like a SUPER JET reading really fast? Ideally, your child should read like they are speaking in a fluent and clear voice.  Furthermore, you can also encourage your child to talk about the story by asking them about the characters, illustrations or interesting words that they noticed in their reading.
