Leadership Centre

Curriculum

WE ARE BACK! The Leadership Centre was buzzing on Monday morning with the exciting return to on site learning! It was great to see everyone and catch up without needing to use technology! There was some obvious height changes, some 'at home' haircuts and some without haircuts since Term Two! It’s fair to say that we were all ecstatic to be back together in the Leadership Centre for what is set to be an amazing final term!

We jumped straight back into Literacy and Math groups this week to settle back into our normal routines. The literacy focus was critiquing and analysing non-fiction texts from a range of sources, on a variety of topics. Each day during Teacher Focused, classes read an article about children in detention centers on Nauru Island. Students connected strongly to the article as the events discussed were similar to the two Morrison Gleitzman novels read in Term 2 & 3. Throughout the rotations, groups focused on identifying the author's purpose and searching for different features within news articles, such as literary devices, sentence structure, keywords and phrases. This week, students will continue to read through a range of nonfiction texts in Guided Reading sessions and explore these further.

In Writing, we are focusing on Informative Writing! On Wednesday, students planned and researched a topic of their choice and for Talk Homework were encouraged to continue researching and discuss their topic with a family member. On Thursday, students wrote (yes hand wrote- wow it’s been a while) their Information Report. Over this week, Leadership Centre teachers will use these writing pieces to plan the focuses over the next few weeks. These will include, paraphrasing information, using reliable sources and structuring and organising writing.

In Mathematics sessions, students focused on Chance and Probability. It was great to see student’s think about real life probabilities such as, ‘What are the chances of Richmond making the Grand Final?’ or ‘What is the probability of Mr Shaw telling a dad joke?’. Using keywords such as likely and unlikely we used numerical values to also describe likelihood and extend our knowledge. Students converted keywords into fractions, decimals and percentages. Tasks focused on creating chance and probability scenarios and discussed different events and its matching likelihood. One group created spinners and explored how their results may vary depending on the amount of spins and how this changed calculations. This week, we build up to creating individual chance games where students will choose and follow different criteria within a rubric.

Moving into the Teen Years! Thank you to Robyn for running extremely informative and engaging sessions last week for the 5/6’s! Considering how difficult technology can be, the sessions were clear and easy to follow along online, with Robyn, and filling out the booklet. Students showed respect when learning about all bodily changes that both genders experience, what makes each person unique and changes in relationships. Overall teachers were impressed with the maturity shown and curiosity when asking and answering questions. Each student who participated was asked to take the booklet home and share with their parent/carers about what was discussed throughout the three sessions. We encourage students to discuss these changes with a trusted adult (including ourselves) so that they feel informed, respected and positive. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher.

Finally, on behalf of the Leadership Centre, we would like to send our best wishes to Miss Nelson and her baby! We are very grateful for Amanda’s support this year with the Year 6's in their Leadership roles and SRC ideas! She will be dearly missed but we cannot wait for her to hopefully visit at the end of term!

Have a great week and we look forward to Footy Day on Thursday!

For showing lots of love for her learning during mathematics sessions last week. You did really well to follow all set instructions for each task and demonstrated a clear understanding of a Probability Scale and the elements involved in probability. Well done Sai.

5/6C: Tom Cl -

For writing an engaging and well-structured information report on Mystic Mountain. You did well to think about paraphrasing information to make it your own and showed passion when sharing about your chosen topic. Great work Tom!!
