Term 3 Week 5 Snapshot

Welcome to Week 5 of Home Learning

The Grade 4 team have had another successful week of whole class and small group Google Meets. Just a reminder to check the class stream or listen each morning during the whole class Google Meets to hear when students' mini lessons will occur each day.  Thank you to all parents for your continued support during this time!

Please read the following overview of the learning tasks for Week 5 of Term 3. The daily schedule, with additional instructions and resources, will continue to be posted on Google Classroom the night before each day of learning.

If your child has completed the day's tasks, they may be interested in completing one of these optional tasks. These tasks are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.

English

An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:

READING

Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher. Tasks this week focus on building understanding of persuasive texts and include:

  • Identifying features of visual persuasive texts
  • Explaining persuasive features and their effectiveness in a range of texts
  • Comparing the persuasiveness of different texts
  • Responding to and analysing classmates' persuasive texts
  • Reading for enjoyment - own choice

WRITING

Writing this week will continue to focus on persuasive writing. Tasks this week include:

  • Using emotive language in posters or print advertisements
  • Identifying emotive language in TV advertisements
  • Promoting a product or idea of their choice
  • Writing choice board

While writing, we encourage students to use the writing cycle to ensure they are continuously developing and improving their writing.

The writing cycle consists of five stages:

1. Plan

2. Draft

3. Revise

4. Edit

5. Publish

Note: Not all pieces need to be published. We encourage the students to write many different writing pieces which they revise and edit. At the end of a unit of work we ask students to choose their best piece to publish.

Word Study

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. Grades 4A, 4B, 4C and 4D will continue to explore Rule 7 and the 5 jobs of the silent final 'e'.  They will demonstrate their understanding of the rule through an assessment at the end of the week. 4E will continue to explore Rule 18, a spelling rule which explains when to choose the code '"ai" or "ay" and "oi" or "oy". The "bootcamp" process allows students to practice the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains. This week, students will attend a word study mini lesson with their teacher.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will continue to represent and compare fractions using models. They are also encouraged to play number games or use Mathletics to continue practicing basic number skills. Tasks for the week include:

  • Using and understanding fractions
  • Placing fractions on a number line
  • Applying their knowledge of converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and visa versa
  • Attending a mini lesson with their teacher
  • Demonstrating their knowledge of fractions by completing an assessment
  • Completing set tasks on Mathletics
  • Choice of mathematics tasks, including measuring, building or drawing

Unit of Inquiry

This week, we will continue our inquiry into how people use initiatives to have an impact on environments. Students will engage in the following tasks:

  • Sharing their opinion and responding to others through online discussions
  • Exploring several initiatives taken to support the environment
  • Learning that environmental initiatives can be classified into five types of action, being: participation, advocacy, lifestyle changes, social justice and social entrepreneurship
  • Classifying environmental initiatives into the types of action

Wellbeing

This week, the wellbeing challenge is called ‘Joke of the Day’.  The students are invited to share a joke with their family every day this week.  It is hoped that this challenge brings some cheer to families as everyone adjusts to a new level of restrictions.

Here are some additional ideas and resources to support wellbeing during home learning:
