Year 7 ACC AFL Carnival Boys

On Tuesday 23 June, a group of Year 7s excitedly dusted off their footy boots, cleaned their mouth guards and jumped on the bus to take part in the annual ACC Eagles School Boys Cup at Ferndale Reserve. With this being the first taste of competitive sport for some months, the air was thick with anticipation and confidence was high. The first game saw the mighty Canons take on a very organized Emmanual Catholic College team, who made the most of strong wind in the first half by kicking a bag of goals. Our heads were still high as it was our turn with the breeze in the second half but unfortunately, we weren’t able to claw our way back into the game and Emmanuel finished up winning comfortably.

Noah Hewitt was busy in full back but played the role well and Tyson Shepherd led from the front as our captain with Brayden Catalano’s attack on the ball being scary at times as he was prepared to win every contest. It was a gallant effort by our boys who only had one training session in preparation but we quickly identified the areas of improvement needed as we prepared for game 2 against CBC.

Our focus of this game was hard contests, repeated efforts and supporting our teammates and the boys flew out of the gates taking a comfortable lead at half time, led by some great work in the centre by Hayden PriceStirling Hatton and Declan Power as well as some nifty goal kicking by Raphael Mahony

Seth Litterick was electric down back and had the boys questioning whether he really had never played football before. We knew CBC would throw everything at us in the second half, and that they did, kicking their way back to within 6 points. If not for a match-saving tackle in defense by James Free as well as the tall target of Jack Mallabone in attack, the result may have been different, but the boys were able to put a few more on the scoreboard before the final siren.

Our 3rd and final game for the day was against Mercy College and the boys were determined to finish the day with a win. Led by captain Anthony Porter, the boys knew the game plan and the importance of working together. Noah D’Urso opened the scoring with a handy goal and the Canons were able to kick a few against the breeze before Mercy fought their way back. With the wind at our backs for the final half, we were confident that we had enough left in the tank to get the job done. We had it all our own way in the second half with many shots on goal just missing their targets; Raphael MahonyNoah Mazzoleni and Jacob Andrews were potent in the forward line and very lucky not to snare 5 or 6 between them. Aidan Quelch and Rafael Canasa were brilliant across half back with some very reliable support offered all day by Rween ArellanoEthan HuntJoshua Hardy & Mitch Hulm.

Congratulations to all the boys on a brilliant team performance who grew as a team as the day went on. One of the boys said he knew hardly anyone before the carnival but left the day having made a few extra mates – which is what it’s all about!

Year 7 ACC AFL Carnival Girls

It was a great day on Tuesday 23 June, with the Year 7 Girls outstanding performance in the ACC AFL carnival. For some of the girls it was their very first competitive game of AFL. The level of skill and competitiveness from the girls was very impressive, along with showing great sportsmanship in the spirit of the Canon’s teams values. With two convincing wins against Mercy College and All Saints College, the final game of the day came down to the last 5 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, the girls were defeated by Emmanuel College going down by 7 points, however, their determination, skills and team work was shown for the entire game. The girls finished in second place for the competition which is an outstanding effort.

Congratulations to all the girls who participated.
