Academic Excellence

Year 7-9 AEP Semester One

Thank you to the students that have participated in the Academic Excellence Program (AEP) in Semester One. It’s been a challenging semester in many ways, but the students have shown commitment and a great interest the topics studied.

The group of students have learned about the cycle of habits, had an introduction to Philosophy, discussed teamwork, competed against each other in our SNC Bridge Building Competition, practiced public speaking and more recently they were introduced to the art of debating.

This week the students were rewarded with a Certificate of Completion and a pizza lunch for all their effort over the semester.

Debating

The students discussed tips for public speaking and then practiced public speaking using the techniques learned. They then learned about the format of debating and how to get their point across using tone and body language. The students then chose a topic to debate, “Human cloning should be legalised”.  As we chose the teams it became evident that this was going to be a battle of the sexes. The boys choosing to argue for legalizing human cloning and the girls choosing to argue against it.

Both teams put very good arguments forward, the boys focused on cloning organs to save lives and the girls focused on losing our individuality and the possibility of overpopulation. Our student judges gave some great feedback to the teams, with the overall winner being the Affirmative team. Well done boys!
