Primary Sport

Last Thursday, the highly anticipated Primary Interhouse Athletics Carnival took place at Bowden Park, Geebung. It turned out to be a fantastic day, filled with strong spirit and enthusiasm. The event provided every student with the opportunity to participate in various Track and Field events, such as the 100m, 200m, high jump, long jump and shot put.

The students competed with unwavering determination, showcasing their talent and athletic prowess. To keep them fuelled and energised, everyone enjoyed the always popular 'Sno-cones,' which gave them that extra boost to cross the finish line, jump higher and throw further.

The atmosphere was charged with energy, cheers and encouragement from all students, motivating each other to excel for their respective Houses. This year's competition included new events: the 100m Championship race, featuring the eight fastest boys and girls, and the thrilling all-age relay.

A big round of applause goes to the top three place getters in the 100m Championship race:

  • 1st place: Vera Chung
  • 2nd place: Isla Cullen
  • 3rd place: Lainey Madders

The all-age relay was an exciting and closely contested event, with the results as follows:

  • 1st place: Ashburn
  • 2nd place: Gibson
  • 3rd place: Youngman

We extend our gratitude to all the staff and coaches for their efforts in ensuring the smooth running of the competition and providing excellent guidance and support throughout the day.

Looking ahead, the annual Tug-of-War competition, organised by the Year 6 students, was held at school on Wednesday 19 July, during Flexi time. Congratulations to Campbell House for emerging victorious in this event and earning the honour of winning the shield.

We eagerly anticipate the announcement of the overall results at the Primary Assembly, and the outstanding achievements of our Age Championships will be acknowledged at the Sports Assembly at the end of this Term.

Interhouse Athletics Championships - Years 7 to 12

A Day of Sporting Excellence and the Inaugural Clayfield College Gift

The spirit of competition was in full swing at the University of Queensland Athletics Centre on Wednesday 19 July, as students gathered for the much-awaited 2023 Interhouse Athletics Championships. The event highlighted a spectacular display of sportsmanship, as students competed for house points, vying for the Championship trophy.

From the adrenaline-pumping sprints to the endurance-testing 1500m, and the mesmerising high jump to the precision-demanding long and triple jumps, the championships had something for every athletic enthusiast. But what made this year's event even more special was the introduction of the Clayfield College Gift, a unique and exciting addition to the competition.

The Clayfield College Gift brought an extra dose of excitement to the championships as it featured the fastest runner from each age group, alongside one wildcard entry, resulting in a thrilling line-up of eight talented athletes for the inaugural event. The energy and anticipation were palpable as spectators eagerly awaited the showdown of the speedsters.

The day commenced with the House War Cry competition, where athletes cheered proudly in their respective house colours, showcasing unity, team spirit, and a strong sense of community. The atmosphere was electric, with cheers and encouragement from fellow students, and staff, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for all participants.

As the events kicked off, the athletes wasted no time in proving their mettle. The sprinting events, from the 100m to the 400m, saw runners push their limits, striving for personal bests and house glory. The middle-distance races, including the 800m and the highly anticipated 1500m, showcased determination and grit as students demonstrated both speed and endurance.

In the field events, the high jump, long jump, and triple jump left spectators in awe of the extraordinary athleticism and technical precision displayed by the participants. Student competitors soared through the air, reaching new heights and distances, while cheers erupted for each successful attempt.

The throwing events, featuring discus, shot put, and javelin, were equally enthralling as athletes displayed their strength and accuracy in propelling the objects through the air. These events added a different dimension to the championships, highlighting the diverse talents and skills of the competitors.

However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the introduction of the Clayfield College Gift. The eight finalists lined up, nerves and excitement evident on their faces, ready to give their all in the inaugural event. The deafening cheers from the crowd pushed the runners as they dashed towards the finish line. In the end, a new champion emerged, Sharie Rainbow, claiming the first-ever Clayfield College Gift title and etching her name into the school's athletic history.

As the sun began to set on the University of Queensland Athletics Centre, the championships drew to a close, leaving behind memories of an exhilarating competition that brought the Secondary School community together. As the athletes and spectators left the stadium, they carried with them the experiences of a day that embodied the true essence of sportsmanship, friendly competition, and house spirit.

Congratulations to Gibson House on another Interhouse Championship victory. This year has been truly remarkable for Gibson, as they not only secured victory in athletics but also achieved success in the Interhouse swimming and cross-country events. Well done, Gibson House, on an impressive year of sporting triumphs!
