Year 8 Football

At the end of last month, the Year 8 Footy team travelled to Geelong to take on Iona College at South Barwon Reserve.

After a slow start, at the first break Trinity trailed Iona by three goals before displaying some excellent link ups and run in the second term to take a small lead into the main break. Again, Trinity dropped away in the third quarter as Iona started to regain momentum and control of the game, hitting the lead going into the final change. We managed to peg the margin back in the final term for another lead change with goals to Toby Barren, Sid Hay and Aubrey Melville. With Trinity down by only one point in the dying seconds, Iona managed to thrust the ball forward kicking a goal on the siren to win by seven points. The game was played in fantastic spirits and the boys conducted themselves in an excellent manner all day.

SSV Greater Western Basketball

Our intermediate and senior basketball teams competed in the Greater Western Championships in Ballarat with some mixed results but always with great determination and spirit. Our intermediate boys won two of their three matches, defeating Hopetoun P-12 and Mercy Regional College in the Pool games. They tied with two other teams on top of Pool A, but their percentage was less than the other teams so they did not progress through to the finals. The intermediate girls lost their first pool game to Monivae by nine points, and then won their second against Edenhope. They finished second in their pool and progressed to the consolation final, defeating Ballarat High School by nine points to finish in third place.

Our senior girls won both of their Pool games against Glenelg and Edenhope and progressed to the Grand Final against a very well-drilled Warrnambool College team. They were even with five nail-biting minutes remaining, but unfortunately we could not convert our opportunities and lost by five. It was a great effort by our talented girls.

Our senior boys played some excellent basketball all day and were rewarded with a chance to play off in the state final in September. There were no Pool games for the boys; they played four games throughout the day and had to finish on top of the ladder to go through to states. They defeated Portland SC, Marian College and Phoenix College, but lost to Hampden division by two points. This meant we were drawn on the top of the table with Portland SC, but luckily for us our percentage was higher by three per cent and we had also defeated Portland in the head-to-head match. The senior boys are now heading off to Melbourne Sports Centre on 12 September.

Senior Girls Football

On Wednesday our senior students played in the state quarter final against Melbourne Girls College at City Oval in Ballarat.

In sunny but very windy conditions the girls battled away against a formidable opponent who clearly had more experience on a football field. Our defence was under pressure constantly for the entire game but held up strong, only being four goals down at quarter time. In the last quarter Melbourne lifted a gear and managed to kick five unanswered goals to win the game.

The girls had fun and were valiant in their efforts on the field and gracious in defeat.

Best players on the day were: Sienna Mallon, Zoe Luppino, Charlotte Leersen, Kiara Foster and Matilda McCullagh.
