Year 8 Visual Arts - Coil Clay Pots

School of Innovation

The School of Innovation has settled brilliantly into Semester 2!

There has been a strong focus on engaging with our learning, being prepared for our classes and learning activities and taking pride in our uniform.

Please note there has been significant changes to our Leadership across the college, and each school now has two Leaders.

We welcome Callum Thompson, who will be co-leading the School of Innovation with me (Rach Chapman). Callum’s role is School of Innovation - Community and Wellbeing. We are excited to have Callum on board and grateful for his expertise and enthusiasm. Welcome Callum!

Term 3 has already provided some excellent learning opportunities for our students. Below is a small snapshot!

Thank you!

Rach Chapman (School of Innovation Leader)

Physical Education

This week, School of Innovation students have begun learning athletics skills in anticipation of the schools athletics carnival in week 5. They started by learning shot put and discuss skills, and will progress to practising high jump and hurdles next week.

Year 7 Maths

Over the last week, our Year 7 students have continued to explore fractions, mastering the art of multiplication and division. Through creative and interactive learning experiences, we aim to make mathematics both enjoyable and meaningful for our students.

One of the highlights of our recent math sessions was an enthralling Scavenger Hunt, where students embarked on a thrilling mathematical adventure. Equipped with their problem-solving skills and a curious mindset, they set out to solve various fraction-based challenges.  Each clue in the hunt presented a unique problem that required them to apply their knowledge of fractions, multiplication and equivalent fractions.

Students will be taking a post-test at the end of the week. This test is designed to assess their understanding and progress in the topic of fractions.

Science

Students have been immersing themselves in the fascinating art of scientifically naming animals using Latin and Greek roots. This adventure into the realm of taxonomy has allowed them to explore the wonders of the animal kingdom while unleashing their creativity.  Students created their very own species! Encouraging their imaginations to soar, students were tasked with inventing unique animals and providing them with scientifically accurate names. By combining different roots and prefixes, they crafted titles that described the species' characteristics, habitats, or even mythical traits.

Year 7 Woodwork

This term, 7A have started Woodwork. After we discussed safety and made sure we were able to be as safe as possible, we learned how to use a drill to drill holes, and how to predrill holes for screws. Students had a great time practising this and after some trial and error they all got the hang of it. After this, they had a try hammering in nails. Thankfully, we remembered our safety tips and there weren’t any sore thumbs!

Year 8 Visual Arts

Year 8 students have designed and created a coil pot out of clay.  The pots were bisque fired over the holidays and they have glaze brushed onto them ready for the glaze firing. We were very excited to see how they came out of the kiln. Students in the next few weeks can take their coil pots home.

Guest speakers - Thank you!

A massive thank you to Blake Knaggs and Ross Hammer from Watters Electrical who came into the college recently to speak to our Year 9 inquirers. Blake and Ross provided our students with a wealth of information about the Electrical trade, the pathway into the job, and what skills and capabilities are needed. Luckily for our students at St Anne's, these are the Learner Assets that we use here at the college. Electricians need to communicate and collaborate with team members and customers; they need to be organised and self-manage their time, tasks, and equipment/materials; they need to critically think and research to make sure that they are performing their tasks appropriately, correctly, and safely.

If you would like to come into the college to speak to our Year 9 students about your job/career and your pathway, please send Year 9 Pedagogy leader Adam Zito an email on azito@sackialla.catholic.edu.au

iPads and Class Materials

All School of Innovation students have been provided with their iPad, keyboard, charger, Apple pen, and stationery; including books, pens, pencil case and folder. These items are required for our students to best access their learning experiences, make progress and succeed. Can you please check in with your student to see if they require any additional items and ensure you provide them with these. If your student has damage to their device, please ensure this is reported to their Pastoral Group Leader and IT so it can be rectified (with any payments or costs organised). Please ensure your student is charging their iPad daily so that they are able to fully participate and engage in all learning activities and tasks throughout the day. If they have forgotten to charge it, they should bring their charger so they may charge it at school.

Important Uniform Information

A reminder that all School of Innovation students are required to wear their academic uniform items each day, except for sports days or other nominated days when their sports uniform items can be worn. Please ensure your student is in their full academic uniform. If this is not possible on a particular day, please send a note, including the date your student will be able to be in full school uniform.

A dress code, in particular a uniform, provides a visual connection to identify students as members of St Anne’s College community. The way a uniform is worn makes a statement about our college and it represents the fact that the student is a part of the community.  The benefits of a school uniform include:

• Allows all students to feel equal

• Helps prevent bullying and competition on the basis of clothing

• Ensures students appearance reflects the expectations of St Anne’s College

• Enhances the profile and identity of the College and its students in the wider community

• Strengthens the spirit of community within St Anne’s College

• Enhances individual student safety and group security

• Ensured all students are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities

• Encourages students to develop pride in their appearance

• Prepares students for the expectations in workplaces

• Encourages students to present themselves appropriately for a particular role

Thank you for your support.
