Year 4
Polly Woodside & Cooks' Cottage Excursion
To compliment the Maritime Exploration and First Contacts Units in Year 4 this term, we visited Polly Woodside at South Wharf and Cooks' Cottage in the Fitzroy Gardens on Wednesday 26 August.
Polly Woodside
When the Year 4s went to Polly Woodside we got to do lots of activities such as steering the wheel, calling out directions then ringing the bell, scrubbing the deck and cracking the code which was Polly Woodside Rocks! We also went in a museum where the walls were moving, we tried balancing on one leg, some of us were hallucinating. The directions were Port which is left, Starboard which is right, Dead Ahead which is forward, and All Hands-on Deck which means there is a storm coming. How many syllables in a word means how many times you would ring the bell except for All Hands-on Deck. All Hands-on Deck means to ring the bell as many times until the rookies wake up and come outside. The sailors also get a four hour break for sleep unless it is All Hands On Deck.
There are eight beds in the sailor’s cabin, they’re all small so the sailors will have to squeeze in. In total, there should normally be 16 sailors, so two sailors will have to sleep in one bed, one on one side, the other on the other side. The sailors would have to smell each other’s stinky foot!
The captain has their own cabin too, the captain has their own toilet, the commander doesn’t have to share his bed unlike the other sailors. The officers also have their own room, they also have very important jobs.
Cooks' Cottage
The Year 4s started by looking at the material of the cottage, then we started looking around the cottage and doing an activity whilst looking around. After we split into two groups. One group was sitting down in the garden, we also touched and looked at some of the replicas that were made. The other group was doing an activity where we had to help a random character to answer the questions, we used flashcards to find what we have to do. Some Year 4s found a room with a TV and artefacts. At the end some people played with some rings to throw into a stick.
