Juniors Learning Space 3

Clinic 2 Juniors in LS3 have been learning all about reading, ordering and making two-digit numbers in maths.

They have had so much fun working with different partners to complete various activities and practising these skills!

Seniors Learning Space 1 - WRITING

The Seniors in Clinic 1 have started the term by focusing on developing their Narrative writing skills. We have been looking at the different ways we can start a narrative text and introduce the reader to the setting, main characters and opening events.

Students have spent the last two weeks re-writing the Orientation from a given text as well as composing the Orientation for a given complication.

Students have been using different checklists to ensure that they are setting the scene for their reader as well as using descriptive vocabulary. We are building on our understanding that good writer’s make mistakes and that we re-read our writing to check for any errors and changes that we can make to our writing.

MATHEMATICS – MENTAL STRATEGIES

Each day, students spend 10 minutes before the commencement of their Mathematics lesson focusing on one key mental strategy. The strategies taught and practiced are developmental and cover the areas of Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division and Number Word Sequence.

The teaching and practice of each strategy is short and sharp and utilises basic everyday maths equipment or students orally practicing the strategy to improve their mental fluency and accuracy.

The strategies children have been focusing on this week and for next week are:

YEAR LEVEL

STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME
Foundation

Backward number word sequence by ones within the range 30 – 0

-Start at 30 and count backwards by 1 to 0

-Can you start at any number between 0-30 and count backwards by 1’s

Year 1

Partition of 10

-What numbers when combined make 10 e.g. 7 + 3, 6+4. Can you record all the combinations in 2 minutes or say them out aloud as fast as you can?

Commutativity

-Understanding that 8+2 + 10 is the same as 2+8 + 10.

Ask you child what is 10+ 2 and then what is 2+10. Can they quickly give you the answer – Do they understand that if they know one fact they know the answer to the other as well.

Year 2

Counting backwards by 10’s from 1000

-Start at 1000 and count backwards by 10’s to 0. Then start at any number and count backwards.

Year 3

Subtraction without regrouping

e.g. using jump and / or split strategies

53 - 11

Jump: Think: Jump back 10 and 1

Split: Think: 50 – 10 = 40

3 – 1 = 2

40 + 2 = 42

Year 4 & 5

Compensation

Can you do the following in your head and explain it to a parent who gives you an equation:

37 + 25:

Think 40 + 25 = 65, 65 – 3 = 62

53 – 19Keep the first number intact

Then Jump back:

53 - 20 = 33

Compensate by adding 1

to 33  SO 33 + 1 = 34

(because you added 1 to 19 to make it 20 when you took away from 53 you need to add 1 to the total)

Year 6

Practicing multiplication and division facts

Revise your multiplication facts and corresponding division facts.

SPORTS NEWS

5/6 Interschool Training

The grade 5/6's continued with their Winter Interschool Sport rotations, even though the weather was not looking good, they did extremely well with their training.

3/4's Winter Interschool Rotations.

This is a great opportunity for our grade 3/4's to practise the Winter Interschool Sports and become familiar with the sports.  When our grade 3/4's are in grade 5/6's they know what to expect.

Divisional Winter Interschool Sport

Our Girls Soccer Team performed amazing today, I want to commend them on their performance today.  Team sports gives you the opportunity to work as a team, communicate with each other and to enhance skills that are required in everyday life.

During the first game our girls played against Hillcrest Christian College, we won 5 goals to one.  In the final game our girls played against Hillsmeade Primary School, unfortunately we lost 7 goals to 0.  Our girls tried extremely hard, however, Hillsmeade out played us on the day.

Congratulations to the Soccer Girls Team on becoming Runners Up in Casey South Division Winter Interschool Sport Finals.

Well done today girls!
