Victorian Young Leaders Indonesian Program
Over the past 3 weeks, 3 of our Year 9 students have participated in an Indonesian Language Program run by the University of Melbourne and the Asia Institute.
"For the last three weeks, I have been taking part in the Victorian Young Leaders Indonesia program, where we have been collaborating with other students from Victoria and Indonesia to create a health and wellbeing campaign. My group created a campaign about how physical health impacts mental health and the benefits of exercise for mental health. Creating the campaign included creating posters, animations and a logo in English and Indonesian. The program has been a great experience for learning about Indonesian culture as well as the language. I have very much enjoyed taking part in the program and would recommend it to anyone who was interested in taking part in it in the future. Here is the website my group created: https://tetapaktifuntukkesehatanmental.my.canva.site/"
- Abigail Johnson (Year 9, Rutter House)
"When I was offered the chance to go on a three week program to develop my Indonesian language skills, I couldn’t refuse. Meeting new people while learning about mental and physical health, as well as health issues facing Indonesia, while learning Indonesian! We played lots of learning games. We also made posters and infographics, learnt lots of new vocabulary and made a website with a video to make a campaign about alcohol use among teenagers (you can see for yourself at https://initiative.undivisible.dev/. Looking back, I am surprised how many new things I learned, which is why I would recommend this for anyone interested."
- Max Carter (Year 9, Stewart House)
"The program has been a great experience to expand my Indonesian knowledge, the language and the UN goals. It has also been a great opportunity to work alongside other Victorian and Indonesian students to further get to know each other and develop our skills. Together we made a website on the negative impacts of smoking https://team-06.my.canva.site/. The VYL program has also given me an insight into the effects in both Australia and Indonesia of smoking and bullying on health. The program has taught me a lot about myself and has been a great, character building opportunity overall."
- Brian Dintinosante (Year 9, Andrew House)
Students are looking forward to the debrief session on 12 September at the University of Melbourne, where they will have the opportunity to meet in person the other Victorian students that they have been working.
