Sport and Drama combine in Zembition

Last Friday night Ms Duff attended a professional production of Animal Farm, the play we are doing for the College Performing Arts Production. This normally would not be newsworthy; she goes to the theatre a lot. However, this time was a little different… In talking to the actors after the show it turned out that one of the actors, Gideon Mzembe, is also an ex professional athlete and motivational speaker. Gideon very kindly offered to come to our College and speak to both our actors and sportsmen, along with fellow cast member Nelle Lee.

Working with our Drama students Gideon and Nelle discussed the skills behind creating a character and especially one that is an animal not human. We got to ask them questions on our specific characters and get feedback on our character choices and physicality.

The Performing Arts boys were very impressed to meet two people who are so dedicated to their craft. They allowed plenty of time for questions regarding acting, character development and other interesting aspects of the performing arts industry. It was an amazing opportunity, and the boys were grateful to meet two very inspirational people.

When Gideon spoke to the boys from the 1st Rugby, Football and Tennis teams he spoke about “Zembition”. We are more than what we have become, we are more than what happens to us, we are not defined by our achievements or circumstances, we are defined by what we do regularly. To be successful we need to create regular positive habits, to have dedication and to believe in our own strength and power. To hear his story and listen to him speak was inspirational for all the boys in the firsts.

From both a sport and performance perspective it was invaluable to have to Gideon and Nelle generously give us their time and impart their wisdom.

Old College Uniform

Our uniform is something that creates great pride in the College and is very important to us, but what happens to it when the boys grow out of it or finish at the College?  We are constantly developing our sustainable practice and looking for new ways to correctly dispose of uniform, as well as collecting goods that are still worthy to be worn.

We will be partnering with Worn Up to help dispose of any uniform, especially anything with the crest on it.  The College’s Social Justice Action Group (SJAG) will be working to ensure fair and sustainable uniform practices.

There will be specially marked Worn Up boxes placed near the College Uniform Shop for you to drop items into.  To ensure we do not waste anything, below are directions of where to put what uniform.

Hand these items into the Uniform Shop for Resale

Any of the following that are in good condition:

  • blazers
  • pants / trousers
  • College jumpers and
  • College Tracksuit tops and bottoms.

Hand the following items in at Reception

Place in a bag addressed to me.  We will use them for any unique circumstances with students and also send them to our Justice Partners:

  • sports shirts
  • sports shorts
  • blue uniform shirts
  • belts and ties in good condition
  • outdated uniform in decent condition– sport or otherwise and
  • College jumpers in poor condition – to be upcycled into blankets for the homeless.

Place the following items in the Worn Up Boxes

  • Any uniform items that are not good enough to be worn including items with stains, tears, or holes
  • Anything that does not fit into a category above

Thank you for helping us to build a better world for all.
