PATHWAYS / CAREERS

MS SALLY LOONEY AND MS BRENDA BRADY - PATHWAYS TEAM

La Trobe University Presentation

Last Friday, representatives from LaTrobe University came to speak to the Year 12 students about a number of things including courses, scholarships, accommodation and the ASPIRE Program.  We are sure all students have found this session very beneficial and many of their questions were answered.

Year 10 Pathways

At the end of Term 1, all 10A students completed work experience in a career area that they were interested in. Students took advantage of this time to explore a variety of opportunities as well as learn about the skills and qualifications needed in the workplace.

We would like to congratulate the 10A class for the way they conducted themselves and the positive feedback we received from employers. As always, we are very grateful that local employers are so supportive of our program.

Work Experience Reflection – Anellie Sabado

I did work experience at Swan Hill Primary School and had the opportunity to work with a variety of classes and year levels, such as Year 1s, PE and Music classes. As well as working with different students, I also had the privilege of meeting and working with other teachers. My four days were filled with new learning experiences and beneficial lessons. During my time there I discovered that patience, organisation, communication and enthusiasm were qualities and skills vital for the job as a Primary School Teacher. Being in the classrooms was very eye-opening to the behaviour of younger kids and how important it is to be mindful of that. I had to slightly adapt my way of communication and behaviour when I was with younger students, as well as older students. Being lucky enough to work with different year levels, I got to see first-hand how different and similar some of the classes are run, and how teachers communicate with students depending on their age. Most of my days were made up of assisting students with activities, such as listening to students reading, participating in PE/Music classes and other minor classroom tasks. Overall, despite having a positive experience, education/teaching does not seem like a possible career choice for me. I would prefer a more hands on and on the go environment.

Thank you to Brenda, Mrs Looney, and Swan Hill Primary for making it possible for me to have this valuable experience, and helping me decide my career pathway.

We feel very fortunate to again be able to have guest speakers address our classes.  Late last term, Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes from the Swan Hill Police Station came and spoke with a Year 10 class about not only about becoming a Police Officer, the application and training process, but also put some students on the spot about how would they handle different situations that officers see every day.  It is a very worthwhile exercise, and we are planning more of these for the remaining Year 10 classes

This term our Year 9 students will be exploring possible careers, developing their job interview skills as well as researching subjects for selection in senior school.

All Year 9 classes attended SuniTAFE this week for a tour of their facilities and to learn about the VET subjects available for them to commence in Year 10, as well as other Certificate and Diploma courses on offer as a part of ongoing further education beyond secondary school.
