Message from Acting Principal Sarah

From Sarah Nightingale, Acting Principal

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope all families had an opportunity to relax and enjoy the holidays and children are ready for a big term of learning ahead.

Term Learning Overviews

Teachers are currently in the process of updating the termly overviews on our website. Please take a moment over the next couple of weeks to view some of the upcoming learning opportunities and events for each year level and specialist subjects.

ANZAC Day Assembly

To commemorate the national day of remembrance we held a short service conducted by our student leaders on Friday 23rd April. We thank Ben Frater for sharing his insights on the day as well as Year 6 students, Twinkle and Chloe for reading In Flanders Fields and the ANZAC Ode.

Classes also engaged in learning activities designed to educate students on the history and significance of ANZAC Day. See an article from Year 1 later in this newsletter.

Drop-off and Pick-up time

As communicated on Compass, this term our gates will continue to open at 8:45 am through to 9 am in the morning for drop-off time and again at 3:30 pm until 3:45 pm in the afternoon to allow students to be picked up from school. Parents are welcome on-site during these times.

If parents are onsite for longer than 15 minutes, they are required to sign in via the Compass Kiosk at the front office or in the case of attending assembly via the QR codes on the school gates.

SunSmart

A reminder that students are required to wear broad-brimmed hats until the end of April. From week 3 students may choose to wear hats, but they are not required to do so until September when the policy will again come into action.

2020 Annual Report to the School Community

The Annual Report to the School Community provides principals and school councils with an opportunity to share the year’s achievements and progress with the school community. This includes reflecting on the school’s performance and explaining the positive impact of school improvement efforts on student outcomes.

Our 2020 Annual Reporting Community Meeting will be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday 20th May. If you would like to attend this meeting, please register your interest via this link.

NAPLAN

This term students in Year 3 and 5 will be involved in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Information will be shared via the newsletter and Compass as we move closer to the assessment period. If you are a parent of a student in Year 3 or 5, please take the time to read through the NAPLAN information later in this newsletter. North Melbourne Primary School’s Second Campus

Please see the following correspondence from the Victorian Schools Building Authority in relation to the new school facility being built at North Melbourne Hill. We are excited about this announcement and look forward to the opportunities it will create for the students and community at NMPS.

Following community consultation, the new school facility being built at North Melbourne Hill will open in 2023 as a campus of North Melbourne Primary School.

The school community told us that they are keen to make the most of the unique opportunity offered by the proximity of the two school sites and to ensure equity of access to the 21st century facilities the new building will provide.

By expanding the capacity of North Melbourne Primary School, we will enable this popular local school to cater for significant enrolment growth over the coming years, and to offer a superb education to all students in the North Melbourne area.

The new school campus zone for North Melbourne Primary School will be released in 2022, ahead of the opening in 2023.

Please see the following article for further details about the new campus. This information is provided by the VSBA.

Building and Grounds Work

A number of building and grounds work took place over the Term One holiday break. As you enter the school ground you will notice there is still a number of construction sites on both the south and north side of the school. These works will continue throughout the term working on the installation of ramps to make NMPS more accessible to all students.
