Sustainability

The Garden Club continues to meet on Wednesday, Day 3 during lunchtimes. We have cleared a vegetable bed and added compost and mulch before adding the tomato seedlings we grew from seeds. In fact, we've had so many seedlings germinate that the Year 9 Environmental Science class re-potted many of these into larger pots so that we can give them to staff and students for a gold coin donation (see photos).

The class also learnt how to propagate plants from cuttings, some of which we will use to plant a herb garden bed when the plants are ready in a few weeks.

National Recycling Week

This week is National Recycling Week, which runs until November 14.

We have taken inspiration to set up a new recycling initiative here at the College. There is a new recycling station set up to specifically collect:

1 - Writing Instruments (pens, highlighters etc.)

2 - Batteries

3- Makeup and Skin Care Containers

These products can’t go into the general recycling but will be recycled if taken to the appropriate place (Officeworks or David Jones for these products). Check out Planet Ark for other ideas for reducing waste going to landfill (https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/nationalrecyclingweek/).

Our Year 7 students will be challenged to participate in the 'Nude Food competition' next week – this will be promoted this week with ideas of what to bring.

ResourceSmart Schools

This week we held a staff meeting with ResourceSmart Schools facilitators (https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/energy-efficiency-and-reducing-emissions/resourcesmart-schools) to start the process of developing our School Environmental Management Plan as we aim to complete our first core module with this program. It was inspiring to hear all the ideas our staff had  to reduce our ecological footprint and embed sustainability in our school’s processes and curriculum. Thank you to everyone involved.
