Year 9 students boiled up the common red cabbage in water to create a universal pH indicator solution. The solution was then used to determine whether common household solutions were either an acid or a base. Pictured: Hayley W, Y9
As you can see from the photograph the resulting colours ranged from a vibrant pink/red to blue/green. If the solution turned red/pink we know it is an acid and if it turned blue/green, it is a base. Common acids around the home include vinegar and soft drinks while the cleaning products around your home are classified as bases.
November marks the 60th anniversary of the Parkes Radio Telescope. We built our own radio telescope models to celebrate. The Parkes Radio telescope is best known for its involvement in capturing the images of human’s first walk on the moon. The movie “The Dish” tells this story.
This task used some STEM skills to follow the plan, decode the diagram and construct the model using shape nets.
