Transitioning from Transition
Melissa Thomson and Emma Kirk (Senior Transition Advisors)
It is with mixed emotions that we say farewell to some more of our Transition students as they embark upon the start of their working careers.
Jet Wynands from the Year 10 class has been working at Summit Bathrooms throughout the year via his regular internship. He has now began working there permanently and will be pursuing a Cert III in Business Administration. Jet has been learning many skills that are required such as picking up supplies, making calls, completing orders, learning how the bathroom designs are achieved via the program AutoCAD and assisting the supervisor to oversee specific bathroom installations. The job involves working independently and collaboratively with a range of people. We wish Jet well at Summit Bathrooms! We would also like to thank the team at Summit Bathrooms who have embraced and mentored several Kurri Kurri High School students with internship opportunities this year. Without support community members such as yourself our students would not gain valuable opportunities within the workplace.
Charlotte Childs, also from the Year 10 class has gained full time employment at KIP Hunter Valley. KIP is a pet boarding retreat which provides happy stays for dogs and cats set on 10 acres of land. Charlotte is learning not only the animal side of the business but is immersing herself in the running of the business and behind the scenes administration duties. Charlotte has proven herself to be an extremely versatile individual in her time with us. She has worked on projects collaboratively with staff and other students and was a mentor to many. She has run advisory activities for various classes and demonstrates leadership qualities. We wish her all the best for her future. Thank you to Amanda for allowing several of our students to have internship opportunities at KIP.
And our final Year 10 leaver is Braydon Fellowes. Braydon left KKHS in August to begin an apprenticeship as a Blaster/Painter at KGB. Braydon has recently signed all the relevant paperwork to leave school, has said his thank you and goodbyes and we wish him well for the future!
In Year 12 news, Tenesha Cullen and Chenika Eketone will continue with their School Based Apprenticeships. Chenika is completing her SBAT at Alfabs Kurri Kurri and Tenesha at Stone Real Estate Kurri Kurri. Montanah O’Neill is currently in the process of applying for the Newstep program at Newcastle University with the aim of then beginning a Bachelor of Education (Primary).
Surviving the Holocaust
Brooke Hackett and Nathan Riley
On Wednesday the 17th of November, Year 10 Big Picture Advisory participated in a Zoom Holocaust Survivor Talk from a real Holocaust survivor through the Sydney Jewish Musem. We sat down in the middle of the classroom in a circle and listened to Susan Warhaftig. She was born in Austria and is a Holocaust Survivor. She talked to us about how she got through and dealt with all the trauma that she experienced as a child. After listening to the Holocaust survivor speak yesterday, you could tell the amount of pain and suffering she had gone through. Susan had fled from country to country before arriving in Australia.
Through being able to hear her story, it gave the class a more, in-depth and personal view of the holocaust and WW2. We were able to connect with the story. I know I felt pain listening to her story, and I was generally saddened to hear what happened. The family pictures were a great way to connect and see her life growing up, and being able to show us who did and did not survive in her family. This was honestly a great experience and we hope every student can learn or at least know about the holocaust.
