KUTA-KAYA

Kirawa

Kirawa have been engaging in a range of awesome learning experiences since returning to school this term. Our students have written about what they have been doing in their unit about the War on Waste and the Sustainable Development Goals as well as their work in financial mathematics:

Mitch- I made a shop for my class, Kirawa shop. I’m doing it because we are learning about money use like bills, budget, renting, and buying. I like cooking and being a barista in the future.
Cooper- This term Kirawa have been learning about e-waste. We got two laptops from IT and pulled them apart. We separated all the components for re-use.
Hunter- We made beeswax wraps. Beeswax is like a natural cling wrap. It is eco-friendly and it was really sticky at first, but once it dried up it wasn’t anymore. It sort of smelt like honey and works amazingly to cover things.
Aiden- In technology with Mr Pearce we have been
using the Kerbal Space Program.
Jayden- Over the past few weeks we have been making paper bricks, as a way of recycling. We have borrowed paper to shred up to make our recycled paper bricks. After we shred the paper we put the paper in water, and make it usable for making. Then we compress the paper into a brick, in a compressive process using a brick maker. Once we are done we put the bricks in the sun to dry off.
Lara- In class we have been studying about money. We all decided to make a classroom system based of the Australian economy. We all had to design different notes to act as our money. The notes' values are 5, 10, 20 and 50. We all had to produce ways to use this cash in class. So, we all had to apply for different jobs to earn this money. One of the jobs is banking, so we can learn how to manage money. We all get different amounts of money at the end of each week. The highest amount distributed is $750 dollars, only 3 people got this amount. There are fines that we get if we don’t follow classroom expectations. There are also things we can buy in the shop, all worth different amounts. All this will help us learn how to spend and manage money so we can be prepared for the future.
Reanna- On November 12th, Kirawa decided to fly kites. We used teamwork and communication to help make the kites so they will fly. After we put together the parts for the kite it was ready to take off, the first thing we did was to know which direction the wind was going. Everyone was working together to find the right direction to fly the kites. It was fun to fly the kites.
Maddi- We were experimenting with tomatoes, onions, and strawberries in glass chemistry vials to learn about greenhouse gases. On top of the glass chemistry vials were balloons so we could see how much gas it makes inside. Also we named the 4 glass chemistry vials tomatoes, onions, strawberries and control and the balloons had different colors the one was pink is strawberries the blue one is control the yellow one is tomatoes and the last coloured balloon is white and that is onions. But all of them had yeast.
