Welcome to our first ever publication for Year 7 news at Saltwater Coast. It has been such a productive start to the year with the return of our students transitioning from the Primary years program of SWC and the welcoming of our newer students to our Saltwater Community. The level of enthusiasm and curiosity exhibited by the students is a sign of a well rested break with friends and family. Although the breaks always seem to fly by, the students have returned ready for a successful year, dressed to impress and eager to achieve.
The opening of the Year 7 building has been an experience to say the least, thankfully we have an amazing wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise within our teaching team. Establishing a new Year 7-9 school requires additional staff and we at SWC are pleased to welcome several new and existing staff members to our Middle Years Teaching team. Within the Year Seven team, we are thrilled to introduce our new staff members for this year: Hayley Hewat (Homeroom, Food Tech and Spanish Teacher), Bridget Longley (Homeroom, English and Humanities Teacher), Christopher Mernick (Homeroom, Physical Education and Wood Technology Teacher), Sophie Ryan (Learning Specialist and MYLNs Coordinator) and Sarah O’Connor (Leading Teacher of Year six and seven). They are joining our existing educators who have also come up from the Primary school; Ryan Ma (Assistant Principal), Amberly Morison (Homeroom, English and Humanities), Nesan Naidoo (Homeroom and Maths Teacher), Todd Robinson (Maths and Science Teacher), Jamie Saleem (Visual Communications Specialist), Phill Hadad (Dance Specialist), Michael Lapina (Music Specialist) Nishani Snooknandan (Art Specialist) and Gemma Fowler (Robotics Specialist).
The team have hit the ground running and really pulled together to provide the best start to 2022 for our Year 7 students. With the disruptions to logistics, we were faced with the delay of our furniture, creating sleepless nights of worry and uncertainty. However, thankfully, the sight of furniture delivery trucks on Monday morning brought about much relief and enabled the Year 7 team to setup classrooms and create environments for learning.
It has been a busy few days for the students, navigating their way through the new building, settling into new routines, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones and trying their best to master the art of using a locker. So far every student has received their personalised timetable, locker and science/maths text books. We thank the families who have already purchased the book packs for students, this has truly assisted with their ease of transition. Book packs are still available to order through Paper Chase.

This week the students have begun to develop essential agreements within their core and elective subjects, focusing on respect, resilience and responsibility. The students are engaging and interacting positively, demonstrating their passion towards learning. Students are to be commended on the way they are presenting themselves - the uniform is looking amazing and they are wearing it with pride. Within subjects, students are exploring their interests and strengths, using these as the foundations to set personal learning goals and relationships with their peers and teachers.
As we move through the year, if you ever have any concerns or questions, we encourage you to firstly reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher as they are usually your best point of call. If needed, the teacher can direct your queries to a member of the leadership team who will be in touch with you. In the end, no problem is ever too big and as a school, we strive to be solution-minded ensuring the best for each and every child in our care.
Here’s to a very exciting 2022 in Year Seven and the beginning of our Middle Years journey.
Kind regards,
Sarah O'Connor
