Year Five News

Written by the Year Five team

Dear Year Five Families,

Welcome back to 2022 at Saltwater College, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new students and their families to our school community. I hope you all had the opportunity to spend time relaxing and reconnecting with family and friends after what was another challenging year for all in 2022 and are recharged ready for another year of exciting learning at Saltwater College.

I had the pleasure of welcoming students into the school today and was greeted by many smiling faces- I also enjoyed visiting each of the Year Five classrooms and along with the Year Five Team would like to congratulate the students on the positive start they have made to the school year.

Year Five Team

As our school continues to grow we welcome a number of new teachers to the Year Five Teaching Team, Sara Martyn (5A), Shaneece Rizzo (5B), Sue Vandermeer (5C), Matt Kreymborg (5D) and Tammie Edie (5E). They are joined by Emily Goegan (5A).

Our Year Five students are being housed down the front of the school this year, occupying our single storey portables.

First 20 Days

The Year Five students are participating in our start up program, ‘The First 20 Days’ which focuses on building positive relationships between the teacher and students and developing classroom routines and work habits. During this program students and their teachers will work together to unpack the attributes of the Learner Profile (caring, thinker, inquirer, communicator etc) by reading a range of related picture story books and participating in class discussions and a range of activities.

In Reading, students have worked together to organise their classroom libraries, establish essential agreements for independent reading and begun to read their class novels.

In Writing, the Year Five students explored the features of a writing lesson and the writing process. They also created their Writer’s Notebook covers and used the Think, Pair, Share thinking routine to discuss the purpose of Writer’s Notebook.  They planted their first seed by creating a heart map- recording what is important to them.

Communication

The relationship between home and school is of great importance, please ensure you keep up to date with what is happening in your child’s class and around the college by- reading our fortnightly newsletter, adding us on Facebook at Saltwater P-9 College, following us on Instagram at saltwaterp9college and finally connecting to Schoolbox using your parent login details.

If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, your first point of call is your child’s classroom teacher, if needed the classroom teacher can then reach out to a member of the leadership team who will get in touch with you.

I look forward to working closely with the students in Year Five and getting to know the families.
