Middle Years

This week, one of the focal points is to get organised for the upcoming examinations. We need to be mindful that the examinations are going to have a slightly different focus to normal End of Year examinations, we need to consider the long period of remote learning and the impact on our Year 8 students examinations preparation time. I would encourage all students to approach their examinations with a growth mindset.

Mrs Bradbeer and teachers will be giving clear outlines about any changes to the examinations, this includes the potential for more skill-based questions, taking in subject summary sheets, and even open book components to the exam. There will be less reliance on rote learning for these examinations.

One thing we need to keep in mind is the importance of reducing anxiety around examinations, this is particularly important this year. We need to focus on the examination process, rather than the result. Our primary aims this term are for all students to be re-engaged in face-to-face schooling. We want them to finish the year feeling confident as young learners.

The examination timetable is being confirmed, and more advice will follow next week.

Get Started

Students need to starting preparing their revision notes over the coming weeks. Students are learning skills, and they are on their L plates. The examinations are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and to practise examination techniques.

Essential Exam Preparation

  • Buy a revision book, I recommend a five subject bound book, this larger book allows notes to be in one central spot. Also have a binder with plastic pockets.
  • Start collating your notes and resources.
  • Ask your teachers for advice.
  • Subject revision sheets are available from teachers.
  • Old tests and class notes that are relevant to the exams. The exams will be mainly based on Semester Two topics, but check with your teachers, as there may be topics from Semester One that will be on the End of Year Examination.
  • Start making flashcards or use Quizzlet to set up your online revision.
  • Revision will start in most classes next week, but I recommend additional time set aside each night for revision. I recommend at least30 mins to1 hour of additional revision per night. The time spent revising soon adds up and can give you a feeling of confidence.
  • Your study is important. Find a place that is conducive to study, with minimal distractions. Find a quiet place. Finding an ideal study place is important because it’s one you can reliably count on for the next few years. Get your study space in order.
