Transgender Awareness

Celebrating Transgender Awareness Week

This year we celebrated Trans Awareness week (November 13th – 19th) with a workshop and discussion on trans representation at NHS. Although it seemed like our group could’ve kept this conversation going all day – we used the time we had to discuss how we can best support each other, the challenges that trans students face, and the changes we’d like to see as an inclusive school that takes pride in – and supports – all our students.

Over thirty students and several staff had a lively discussion over (BYO) lunch on Friday, with a fabulous turn out of students all keen to contribute and be part of positive change at NHS. Students identified a number of obstacles and prejudices that trans and gender non-binary students must navigate daily. From these points, our group brainstormed and shared their opinions on prioritising inclusive practices – including gender neutral bathrooms, education (for staff and students), school camps, the importance of using people’s correct pronouns (rather than making assumptions) and the role of consent and sexuality education in empowering and educating our community.

Although Trans Awareness week only occurs once a year, support, advice and resources are available to trans and gender non-binary students throughout the school year. Students are encouraged to speak (confidentially) with a member of the Student Services Wellbeing team to learn more about our Gender Affirming Processes at school. You might like to check out the following resources:

  • Minus18 work to support the health and wellbeing of same sex attracted and gender diverse people Australia wide. In addition to some great resources, they also sell cool merch that supports LGBTQIA+ youth
  • Zoe Bell Gender Collective (or ZBGC) supports trans and gender diverse people through education, advocacy and awareness raising. Check out their resources on getting some support yourself, supporting a loved one or learning more about gender affirming practices
  • Transcend Australia works with and for trans and gender diverse young people and have a range of resources for young people and their families
  • Check out the amazing selection of gender diverse resources available in the John Cain Library – our fabulous library staff have put together a display and reading list for those who want to be inspired by the fearlessness of other activists, want to learn more, or just want to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of LGBTQIA+ literature. Do check it out!
