Understanding your rights at work

This time of year sees many young people starting holiday, part-time or full-time employment for the first time.

Young people can be vulnerable in the workplace, especially as they navigate trying to learn the job and build relationships with their workmates and employer.  Understanding workplace rights can be complex and challenging, but there are organisations that can assist.

JobWatch is a not-for-profit community legal centre providing support to workers in Victoria who are vulnerable to exploitative work situations due to their age, gender, race, culture, class, location or visa status. Their telephone information service (TIS) runs from 9am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday – 03 96621933

Other organisations which protect employee rights and assist in resolving disputes include the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission, WorkCover and Legal Aid Victoria.
