DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - COMMUNITY
Mrs Sandra Manning
Despite the soaring temperatures this week, the hot weather did not seem to dampen the enthusiasm and energy of our students as they started their new academic year. It has been wonderful to see our students return, eager to share their holiday news and catch up with their friends, classmates and teachers. Building this strong sense of connectedness between students, staff and parents is the true foundation of flourishing school communities, and a powerful precursor to academic success and wellbeing.
This year, in my new role as Deputy Principal – Community, I am excited to be working with the House Coordinators to introduce new horizontal and vertical House-based activities and events that will give all our students even more opportunities to connect with their peers, and with younger and older students on campus.
Our House Coordinators have already been busy this week, assisting the Year 7 Pastoral Care Group teachers as they welcome and support our new Year 7 students in their first few days on campus. Next Thursday 9 February, our first House event is a House Assembly where students will learn about the rich history of their own House and the various activities and events to come. Our goal is for each student, though participation and engagement in House and co-curricular activities, to grow in confidence and connection with a strong social network and engagement in the life of the College.
In Week 3, on Wednesday 15 February, we have our Inaugural House Beach Carnival, held over the road at our local Sorrento Beach for Year 7 and 8 students. This replaces the traditional Year 7 and 8 swimming carnival and reimagines it in a vertical House sense. More information regarding the Beach carnival will be available to parents next week.
Also in Week 3, on Monday 13th February, our Parents and Friends Committee invites parents to join the first P&F meeting of the year, with a special warm welcome to all our new families at the College. We will gather in the Hywood Room for wine and cheese at 7:00pm with our Principal Mr Leo Di Gregorio, and then conduct a short meeting to set the agenda for the year's fundraising and social events.
Partnering with our parents serves to strengthen the sense of connectedness in our students and I look forward to seeing many of you at our various House and College events this year.
Students are reminded that if they are using cash instead of their SmartRider, they must have the exact $0.70 as Bus Drivers do not carry change. E.g. if you have $1.00 they will not be given change.
