STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS

UNIFORM

In the final College Newsletter for 2022, our College Principal, Mr Di Gregorio reminded parents about the importance of supporting the standards and expectations set by the College in relation to uniform. I wish to remind all parents of Mr Di Gregorio’s comments,

"The College Uniform is fundamental to the tone, standards and culture of our school. In 2023, the College is determined to ensure that students wear the College uniform with great pride and to the highest possible standard. The support of parents/caregivers is essential to ensure that the College maintains the highest possible standard of uniform. Parents/caregivers are requested to carefully read the College Uniform Guide which has been recently updated and is available below. Students are required to meet the expectations set out in the new College guidelines from Day 1 of 2023. Parents/caregivers will be contacted immediately if students do not meet College expectations. This particularly applies to hairstyles, grooming and dress lengths."

“It take a village to raise a child” and the support of parents is crucial in order to maintain high standards at Sacred Heart College. Our College values and standards are visible every day in the way our students present themselves and we thank you in advance for your support.  Please carefully read College Uniform Guide

COMPASSION, COURAGE AND RESPECT

Parents are reminded to consistently reinforce with their children the importance of practicing and living the College values of courage, compassion and respect in their daily interactions with their peers and with staff.  These values should pervade all aspects of what we do at Sacred Heart College.  We expect all of our students to behave in a respectful, polite and courteous manner at ALL times.

PARENT HANDBOOK

The College is in the process of finalising a Parent Handbook that will be made available on the College website.  This document will provide parents with a collection of important information in relation to the day to day functioning of the College. Parents will be advised as soon as this is available.

THE REAL MEANING OF FAIL

As we begin a new school year, we need to reinforce with our children, that any school year is filled with ups and downs and our job as educators and parents is to provide our children with the support, tools and strategies to effectively cope with the various challenges they face.  Unfortunately in recent times, there has been a societal trend to ‘over protect’ and under expose our children from the experience of failure.

If our default position is to continually and consistently protect our children from the experience of failure, how will they learn how to effectively cope with the inevitable ups and downs and challenges of life?

FAIL stands for ‘First Attempt in Learning’.  Failing is not a ‘bad’ experience, but rather it is a normal part of the human growth experience.  It is an essential part of learning so that we can grow and improve.   Our College motto, ‘Always Striving Upwards’ has sometimes been misinterpreted.  It does not mean that we are expected to be perfect, but rather that our aim is to keep seeking improvement and learn from our mistakes.

As we begin a new school year, I remind all members of the College community that real learning occurs when our young people know how to cope and deal with challenges and disappointment. We must teach our young people to focus on their personal best to ‘believe in themselves’, ‘keep trying’, ‘have another go’, ‘never give up’ and ‘give their best’.

POSITIVE THINKING AND GOAL SETTING

Parents are reminded about the importance of working with their child to establish positive goals and aspirations for the 2023 school year.  Each year presents a new beginning and an opportunity for our children to flourish.  I wish all students and parents a fantastic year at Sacred Heart College!
