Senior School

5/6 JDZ & 5/6 JD

WELCOME!

Hi everyone, welcome to our newsletter page for 2023! Can you believe we are already half way through Term One?

By now, most of you will be familiar with what's been going on in our classes, but we'll give you a bit of a recap!

We plan to use this page to highlight some of the wonderful work and achievements of students in our classes, rather than just give you a recap of everything we've been covering!

LEARNING AREAS

As many of you will be aware, we had a big push at the beginning of the year to complete pre-testing. This gives us a baseline to begin the year to not only identify areas of need for each student, but to also give us the best opportunity to measure growth throughout the year!

In Reading so far, we have explored making valuable connections, inferring using text clues and prior knowledge and developing predictions supported by evidence.

In Writing, with NAPLAN fast approaching for our Year 5 students, we have developed Narratives and Persuasive Writing pieces. We have looked at features of both genres and challenged ourselves to expand ideas, bump up vocabulary and develop editing to improve spelling, punctuation and grammar.

In Maths, Number and Place Value have been the priority. We have improved our use of strategies when adding and subtracting large numbers. We practice multiplication daily as a warm-up activity and we have explored knowledge of place values and rounding numbers including decimals.

HOUSE CAPTAINS

House Captain voting took place earlier in the term. It was fantastic to see so many of our students nominate themselves and present speeches to their houses. We were so proud of all of these students and know that regardless of whether they were appointed to a role or not, our school is in good hands with excellent senior leaders!

Congratulations to Olivia M, Paige, Ieuan, Nolene, Jordan, Sienna D, Hannah and Indiana R for being appointed House Captains for 2023!

GOLF CLINICS

We have been fortunate enough to participate in a couple of golf clinics so far this term. Paul has been a regular visitor to our school in past years, passing on his golf expertise. The students have had a wonderful time learning different aspects of golf. Whilst our putting skills were awesome, there was definitely more enthusiasm when they got to hit balls in the air and hit them hard! There have been some spectacular skills on show! Who knows, maybe we have a future Cam Smith or Karrie Webb in our midst!

VICTORIAN STATE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR

We are extremely excited to be involved in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular again this year! Schools are allocated 16 places so it was a tough audition process to narrow down our field. We were super impressed by all of the students who auditioned and would have loved to take them all! We are looking forward to kicking off our rehearsals next week!
