Year 12 English

Jane Harrison – Author Visit

We are thrilled to have welcomed Jane Harrison, author of current Year 12 text, ‘Rainbow’s End’, to speak with the English students on Monday. It is rare to have contemporary Australian authors on the text list, so to be able to invite Jane to visit Shelford was a privilege.

The play was commissioned by Ilbijerri Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Co-operative who asked Jane to tell a decade of Victorian Koori history and to focus on “the heroes”. In her presentation to the students, Jane talked about finding the resilience and love shared by  heroic women. Three generations of the same family are her protagonists. Jane encouraged the students to remember that writing is a process and not something that can be done without careful thought. Our students will use the text as impetus to write creatively and Jane’s presentation has ensured a variety of approaches and perspectives will be explored.
