Languages Update

Julie Devine, Head of Languages

Japanese Visitors to Shelford

We are very excited to announce that we will be welcoming a small group of Japanese students to Shelford for a one week visit in 2023. They will be here from March 14 to March 21, and we will be hosting 8 students aged 15. They have just finished their Year 9 studies and are in Australia on a break before they return to Japan to start their Year 10 courses.

We are now looking for host families to look after the girls during their time in Australia. This is a cultural rather than a language exchange and so is open to all families at Shelford. Host families are required to provide the girls with a place to sleep and three meals a day, and will receive a payment of $350 to help cover the costs of hosting.

If you would like an application form or more information about this program, please email Julie Devine at jdevine@shelford.vic.edu.au

Language enrichment programs

We are delighted to be continuing our French and Japanese Language Enrichment programs after school. The Language Enrichment Programs are designed to make a space for students who speak Japanese or French at home or students who are studying French or Japanese outside of Shelford to touch base with a teacher. The aim is to maintain and develop their language skills. For students who are studying independently, it’s an opportunity to ensure they are progressing through their programs and to give them a chance to ask any questions they might have. They are by invitation only, subject to an interview with the language teacher.

The French enrichment program will be on a Tuesday Day 7 from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in room C15 and the Japanese enrichment program will be on a Monday Day 6 from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in room C16.

Typical participants might be:

  • Students undertaking French or Japanese by distance education.
  • Background speakers of French or Japanese or students who speak French or Japanese at home.
  • Students who have come to Shelford from schools which offer immersion programs in French or Japanese.

Please fill in this form if you think your daughter qualifies for our language enrichment programs.
